Newport Ri 2011 Squid Season
I took the Jenny Lee and a few friends out last night to NPT harbor and few other spots. No squid. Nothing on the fish finder either.

We did try out a new HydroGlow lamp I bought last year and it is the bomb.

Here is a video of it:

The water temp was between 53 and 54 South of Prudence Island the entire night.

Oh - BTW - there are SERIOUS rock ledges under the NPT Bridge. doh!

did i hear you correct? the light is 4'? where did you pick that up? is it fully submersible or does it float on its own?
I'm thinking of taking the boat out and trying sat night or sun night. Just wondering if I should putt all the way to newport, or if they will be along the RI beaches near point judith. I much prefer the beaches if the seas are kindly, it's a much shorter run.

Any thoughts on where the early squids might show first?
this is a great question. I, too, want to fish more from my boat. I tried inside the lower bay all around NPT on Friday night into dawn with no success. There was plenty of bait, just no squid.

That is correct. It is 4' long and float on its own. It comes with about 12' of cable with two larger alligator clips. The entire rig is stored in a fly rod-like looking tube when not in use. It seems VERY well built and rugged. I bought it at the Canyon Runner seminar last year. It was positioned as a swordfishing attractant but I thought it would be good for squid as well. Swordfishing is too far offshore for my vessel, but them squiddies are all MINE!!

Here is a link to it.: HyrdroGlow Products 4' light

It is a nice add on to the halogens and generator.

I too got myself the hydroglow. It's a good light to fish in dark desolation. It sure beats the hassle 2 stroke smokeness of a generator . Don't let the secret out. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wh' />
Hey Gwen, we dont dare take the ride if there are no Squid :< please eamil me personally if you here of any Squid.

suzette818@comcast.net I will bring margeritas when we come, owe yah and appetizers also.
i have two 1' white lights like that that i use for over night tuna trips. i havent seen a 4'er before though.

I have confirmation from a very reliable source that squid are being caught @ sakonnet point. newport, south shore beaches should be going off any night now
I was at the Bass Pro shop this afternoon and saw this one, 21" for $22. It's not as nice as HydroGlow but something low budget worth a shot.

$22... you get what you pay for. I rather put in the $200 and break-even within a few trips and then just sit on the investment. It's all about yielding!
Caught about a dozen super tubes Sat. night. Some of the biggiest squid I've seen. Grilled them up last night, Yummy. The school only came thru twice, not the massive numbers yet. A good sized bait ball under the light, which was a major improvement from last week..

Get those lines wet, good luck.

I have a hydroglow, but don't use it since I added underwater led's to my boat. Beware - they break VERY easily. Keep them away from the boat while drifting, if they bang up against it you can lose the lamp and then its big bucks to fix.

One thing we would do is to use an outrigger to hold it out away from the boat.

I've also used the small 2 foot lights. They are bright, but nowhere near the light the bigger hydroglow puts out.

Oh, and one last thing. Last year the hot bite off the beaches came with lights OFF. The headboats keyed us in to this. One night they weren't turning on their lights and they did very well. That was early season.

So be aware that sometimes, less is more. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

I'll be sure to becareful with my 4' hydroglow. I was looking into a pair of Amphibian A6 but that was way too expensive and I don't do much night fishing but wash color looks really cool tho!
Yawn Is it time yet?

any hints on lure size or color? last year my lures were too big. Do they care about color?

Like she said "Size doesn't matter" LOL... Well in the spring time that is. Popular color in the spring is "Pink" preferably a Yozuri bird style. I'm not too keen on the prawn styles. But definitely pink is my first go to, if that doesn't work then green will. But green/orange is relentless in the fall. Homemade jigs made from Bic pens never seem to fail <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> I only jig when I have to... but if there's a big float then break out the net(s), we're filling a few coolers boys <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

What is the difference between bird style and prawn style? I still have much to learn. Thanks,

Prawn style tend to be a "S" shaped whereas the bird style are "torpedo" shaped. Google image Yo-zuri squid jigs.

Also in the fall time you have to go smaller because those squids are smaller and hesitant to attack larger jigs. Squid in the spring come from offshore to spawn in the warm shallows so their offsprings have lots to eat. Those offsprings then grow over the summer and migrate offshore in the fall/winter. So the cycle of squid life...

Thats the first time I've heard anyone say they net them in bulk. I'm assuming you are using a cast net? Any specific techniques other than throw and retrieve?

I've always wanted to try, but never saw them balled up close enough.
is it actually legal to net them........was always wondering that have seen some big schools in various locations and have always jigged
