Apollo Bay, VIC
#21
Spent the weekend in Apollo Bay, did about 20hrs surf fishing in 3 days.

Caught a good variety of fish with a number of nice sized salmon being a highlight.

While I had a good time, I checked the pier a dozen times for any squid action and leaned against the rail for a jig in the water for a few hours each night too.

Unfortunately NOTHING <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':firefighter:' /> While there were some ink stains on the concrete, none appeared fresh. The "word on the street" was that an exceptional number of squid were running in the harbour in the week leading up but the whole time I was wetting a jig there was one or two seals swimming around the pylons and generally making a nuisance of themselves.

One 3 hour session finished with only a half dozen undersized fish being pulled in by the 25-30 anglers on the pier. By that time the night had really cooled off and I rejoined the rest of my group back at our accommodation, disheartened.

Though I suppose there's always a silver lining; I've got all my rigs, tackle box and jigs in good working order and the trip was a great relax. The group is now enthused about fishing more regularly and I've put a handreel and a couple of jigs in the spare wheel well in the boot of my car so I'll have no excuse when the opportunity arises to head towards the coast. I think I'll be seeing a bit of the Mordialloc-Mornington section of Port Phillip Bay from now on.
Never happier than on a quiet pier, on a cold, dark, wet night, with a bucket to sit on, pole in hand and a fully charged iPod.

Good report, nice you got some sambos at least. The squid at Apollo Bay can be very frustrating, sometimes they're there, sometimes they're not, sometimes they're tiny (10-15cm), sometimes they're MASSIVE, and sometimes even when they're there (you can see them in the water) they won't take any kind of jig or bait you throw at them. But it's always worth a crack because when they're 'on' the action can be fast and furious. Other things to watch out for in the harbour are the schools of big barracouta, and also there are usually always some trevally about (best bait for the AB trevs is cray tail).

Such a shame I went home without any squid. I packed a 2.5 and a 3.5 sized jigs, 21ft pole, handreel and some spare swivels and spare line and was dreaming about 3 consecutive days of hitting the bag limit; I had no intention of doing much 'normal fishing'.

I'd heard the harbour was full of 'good sized' squid all week, and given that the area is commercially fished for squid I was excited about nabbing a few huge ones amongst the dozen I was certain I'd be going home with.

No luck unfortunately, and worse still I had aunts and cousins looking forward to stuffing a couple, BBQing another 2-3 and deep frying the remainder... Maybe next time...

[quote name='glen' post='156' date='Mar 11 2003, 01:10 PM']"Lorne Pier under the first light " is what I have listed in the recommended fishing spots section on this website.

This is not too far from Apollo Bay.

Best of luck,

Yep... that old first light is now well gone. And has been replaced with a runway of 4foot flouro lights the lenght of the New pier.

Still squid can be teased out of the weed beds at that half way point... just little tackers, but is a bit of fun after work.

hello,

i do all my squid fishin at apollo bay. its a great place to go. over summer i had great success using 1.8 or 2.5 orange or pink yo-zuri jigs. the most productive times are at dawn and dusk. squid in the apollo bay harbour can be very annoying, u will see them but they just dont want to take your jig then other times they will be goin off. i do my squiddin off the jetty or pier and sometimes in a tinny, all the best. i mite even see ya down there.

happy squidding!!

Apollo Bay ROCKS!!!!

Lorne Pier... pfft, that has nothing on Apollo Bay Marina

In fact, its pretty much all the Marina is good for....

Boat, or land based, the Bay Marina is full of squid and calamari!
