I know it is early, but I may take a drive to the dock this weekend <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thumbsup2:' /> to see what is going on. It has been a mild winter.

I started squid fishing 6 years ago, and the more i research the sport, the more I realize how little we know about these creatures:
1. Does any one know the approximate water temperature that trigger squid to migrate into local waters? Greenport etc... 2. Has anyone had any luck catching squid off piers with cast nets? 3. The last few squid seasons have been horrible in Greenport. I'm starting to think that the warmer the water temperature, the worse the squid season will be. It seems that when we have warm water on the North Fork of Long Island, the Blue Fish move in too soon and decimate the squid/ fluke season. In short, I'm trying to pinpoint any indicators that correlate with approximate squid arrivals in Greenport. One more question: What is the earliest any of you have caught squid in Greenport? It seems that April 24th is a reasonable date to begin my squid fishing endeavors.

I have heard the blues are in, if this is true, there is no season.

I think you are right about the warmer water tempatures. I remember as a kid going suid fishing in Greenport in April it was at least freezing temps. felt like winter temps always the years we caught alot.

Hi guys, I'm new to this site, but have been fishing for squid for bait for about 35 years. Most of my squidding has been on Martha's Vinyard, Ma. I now live near Nyack, N.Y. and am curious about any squidding in the northern N.J. area and Long Island. I still fish the Vinyard every fall and sometimes in the spring, but would like to get in more local fishing since I retired last year and now have more time to do so. Any info on Greenport (where, when, accessibility, crowds, etc) squidding would be appreciated. Most of my squidding on the Vinyard has been done at night from docks, especially docks with lighting of some kind, is Greenport like that?? Thanks and tight lines !!

Squid have arrived in G-po. Greenport is like that. You need to bring your own lights to the public docks in Greenport. The dock is next to the train station. It is crowded if the squid are there.

Went to the docks in Greenport on Saturday night. 11pm-1am. I had my dual light setup on the Marina dock. My brother in law (first time squidding) caught 3. I caught none. Looked like a dozen or so people on the railroad dock but didn't hear much excitement. 3 is better than 0 but far from those red-hot years. Was still fun.

Are there any docks there with existing lights? I don't have a battery pack and light. I usually fish on lit docks and do well without an extra light on the Vinyard. Are they getting thick there yet?? Thanks

Going to Greenport tonight with my girlfriend for our first ever squid fish! Can anyone tell me what kind of light we need, and anything else we need other than jigs, rods, a light, and a bucket?
Also, what re the best hours? We're plannign to go from 11pm - 1am like Southolder did.

Fish from a boat in 60 to 90 feet of water over any reef. Chum with bunker chum and shine lights, they will come. I went a few times this summer, best night was over 60 squid for one guy.
Hi everyone,I am closing off this topic as it is being replaced by the following page for the 2013 Greenport squid season.
