Newport Ri 2013 Squid Season
Every year I load all my squid gear in the car ready to go when the bite gets hot,and it seems like the last 3 or so it never does. So today I am taking it all out of the car and hoping that will improve the "bite". If it gets better than you can all blame me for the bad runs.

Get ready everybody.

I hear you Mike.  Without any visible success out there, I'm just not motivated to fight 3-5 foot forecasts and cash in night's away from home cards just to snag a few squid (or none at all).

It would be nice if there just enough to get people interested, but not yet.  The charter boats that rely on these trips are dying out there.

Oh well.  The fluke are here at least.

Fished last night at JT. There was plenty of bait fishs but I only managed to caught 12of them.

I've got 12 of them with in 30min but after that been quiet rest of night.

I will hit that spot again tonight any one want to join?
More squid starting to show up off RI's south shore according to commercial fisherman. Better late than never!!

Don't know yet.

I only able to catch one squid last night Sad(

There was tones of bait fish but no squid...

Thanks Josh!
Fished Nebraska shoal from 11pm till 4 this morning and only landed 1 squid. Saw plenty of them swimming around and lots of action on the sonar but they all seem to have lockjaw. Water temp dropped 2 degrees from last week and it was dirty. Guess the 4 days of rain took its toll.
Thanks Darknight, headed out fluking tomorrow.

On the fluke front, I was out yesterday and the fishies were biting.  They were spread out but we still managed 1-2 fish per drift.  Hit the beach between nebraska shoal and the harbor of refuge in about 40 feet +/-.

Good luck.

Thanks, Not sure if we are headed to Montauk, Ruins,  or Fishers I., have to see what the conditions are.
Seems everyone has mostly given up on squid. Anyone headed out tonight? I was going to give it another try. I assume I won't catch squid so can anyone recommend any dual-purpose spots for squid and anything else. I was thinking I would like to cast out a baited pole for fluke or stripers or blues (at this point, I'd even take scup) and while waiting for a strike, jig for squid. I know people catch fluke and stripers and blues from GI, but this year, there is essentially no chance (so far) of catching squid at GI. I know people have been catching squid from JT, but I haven't read of anyone pulling in much of anything else over there. Ft. Adams was, in past experience, always a very slow day of fishing for me with little/nothing to catch, although people do claim to catch pretty much everything there. Mostly rambling, but any suggestions to my conundrum?

You'll find bass feeding on sand eels by the street lights at ft adams. But you won't catch any squid there with them around
pot0mon: Is it your opinion that the squid came so late and the bass not so late that the squid season is in jeopardy?

At least I noticed there is bunch of striper come and go at JT.

No wonder why squids are low in action.

Also I noticed squids are extremely picky too.

It may be like this til end of season sight Sad(

I feel squid has been here in good numbers for 3 weeks now. I've fished GI and JT couple of times in the past week and a half. I've noticed people not giving it enough time. Or go there look in peoples buckets and lights and not give it a shot at all. I always give it a good 6 hours of fishing before I call it quits.

I hate fishing for squid on a full moon, even though this pass weekend it was covered by clouds. I think a bright full moon ruins the effect of our lights. Squids will likely be more spread out because of the moon lighting up everything.

GI been best for me 3 hours after low tide and all the way up to 3 hours after high tide.

Squid fishing tends to slow down or seem dead when blues and stripers are around.

That is just my opinion and from what I logged over the past 7 years of squid fishing.
I will also add big mother load of squid have yet to arrive.
Bass are grabbing the squid jigs! Squid get spooked when bass are around and there are more small bass around than I can ever remember!

If your out there fishing or if you know anyone out there. Big time thunderstorm is rolling in.

I work in mass and I see a lot of lightning hitting the ground

I was out at Ft. Adams. I saw the lightning moving in and packed up quick enough that I only got splashed with a few fat rain drops. As I was leaving though, I heard a guy who was squidding say, "I think this is only going to be a passing shower." Boy was he wrong. Smile

As to a report, there were a ton of schoolies jumping and feeding on sand eels, but they wouldn't hit anything we threw at them that looked remotely close to a sand eel. That said, they hit a couple times on a lure which looked like a squid, which would suggest to me that the squid are finally moving in.
