No need for a boat, they're all around the bridge. Just bring sabiki rigs.
Checked all the regulars spots again today. No ink anywhere!
been on the Newport bridge for like 20 mins and no budging... What's going on up there!!
Bit confused. I know herrings good eatings, but I was told herring fishing was for nov-mid jan aka Winter fishing.

Do herrings come in now as well? or are they small right now? Can anyone explain?
Spring has sprung and the squids are moving through the cod grounds off BI. They should be in on the New Moon!

I caught whole bunch of them today. They do run in spring along with bunch of mackerel.

But be careful. Only Atlantic herrings are regal to catch other type of herring is illigal and fine is very stiff. $500 for each fish, if you caught 10of under limit or prohevited species fine will be $5000. Ouch!

So learn before you having fun.

Good luckSmile
The commercial squid boats are dragging off BI so they are on their way.
Draggers are always working off of bi, the beaches, and the whole patch out to and beyond coxes ledge.

How do you know they are targeting squid?
I know them.
Frances Fleet is planning on squid fishing this Friday. Wonder how they will do.

They will fill the boat... With anglers. Squid? We will see. I may be right next to them. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Squidy, if you know them, then nevermind......
Hi. First time poster. Hopefully first time squid jigger. Every year, I intend to try squid fishing. Every year I seem to miss it. I plan to make this year my year that I actually make it out.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever taken squid in quantity from any Newport shore spot other than GI? Never having done it before, I'm just concerned about screwing up and gettin my line tangled with other anglers and whatnot. I know it can be shoulder to shoulder down there. I've read people posting that they fish near the bridge in a boat. If that works, I was figuring the beach in front of the War College would be a good spot. Any opinions/advice?

Ahh yes I heard of the 4 species of herring and the atlantic herring being the only one we should be catching and keeping. lol

Didn't realize the fine was THAT expensive. lol

I'm from the New york city area. Going to try to see if anyone around jones beach/fire island or east long island know of any good herring fishing spots. =]

Thanks for the reply and info!

You are very welcome. XD

I hope no one have to pay fine for it and helping to preserve marine life.

If all the fishes are gone, next generation will blame us for that.

BTW here is link for herring regulation

http://www.dem.ri.gov/programs/bnatres/f...herrid.pdf

And here is RI fishing limit for this year

http://www.risaa.org/regs.html

And finally... Environmental police will issue ticket for who doesn't have fishing license.

Fine will be 500bucks!!!

If you doing squid fishing or catch something else you must have fishing license.

I talked one of environmental police about this issue, he confirmed it.

If you catch herrings from the bay you're fine... The anadromous herrings (bluebacks) nothing like sea herrings. The ones at GI are sea herrings so stop worrying over nothing!
