Squidding In New England States
At the canal last night, low tide did not see any on the surface, however they're bites on the bottom. Caught 26 squid from 8:30 to 12, size from 5" to 10" long. I was doing really good in the right corner, then hadbro show up with the generator and light, then went cold.

Hopefully I can get down there Fri.... And yes it is strange about the light. I think the lights we bring are too bright for the canal. They swim up to the street lights just fine. I think they are afraid to be in such bright light. When the canal was lit with the old lights and the squidding was easy the light was bright but it was ambient light not a spot light right down on the squid. I know the canal lights are less bright now but they must still help the squid hunt compared to no lights. The still swim to the canal lights it's just a little harder to see them now.

For the record this is the 6th time in 2 months where I have either witnessed or heard of the bite dying as soon as bright light was introduced. As a side note, the light on squid boats is very bright but it's also 20-40' off the water.

So basically, I just spent bucks on lights that I shouldn't use Sad Oh well... such is life... do the lights work better in other places like beverly?

Anyone know if the squid are still there? I was thinking to go tomorrow night...

The light will help attract the baits fish in the area that the current is not moving so fast. I use my in the deep area, however the squids is on the outer ring (dark area). I toss my jig past area, as the jig falling down and the squid will chase and bites.

Fishermonkey, your light is different. Somehow the squids doesn't like LED light.

But the new canal lights are LED. I have to beleive the spot lights
may deter the squid in the canal, as I've heard it to many times now myself.
Maybe it has something to do with the current thats there that makes them
uncomfortable in bright light. Sounds good to me as that's less crap to load
and haul.

Lights are not needed in Beverly, it is well lit there...Salem, light is needed.

Have not heard of any squid in either spot lately...

Wow, 72 in 2hrs !! That's great. What time & tide did you go to canal ?

I got 33 on Wed between 1am-4am, after high tide, of course "no light".

What night did you go? What was best time? Those are the numbers
I'm looking for. With those numbers I should be able to catch a
dozen in 4 hrs.

Fri night between 630 and 9:00. So i guess it was about 2hs after high tide. Wish I could have gotten there a little earlier though because the squid were there when I arrived. Horrible weather though. Extremely windy, white caps all over the water.

I have no problem with light 2 weeks ago.  I caught half a bucket.  Right now there are a lot of squids in RI.  Was there last night for 3 hrs and caught 2 buckets but they are not that big.

Where do you go in jamestown?

At the end of fort wetherhill rd. At the end you will see RI Dept of Fisheries. You can fish right off their dock.

I was there last night from 9-12 didn't catch much.  Only half a bucket.
