Squidding In New England States
#41
Went to Beverly last night from 9:30 pm to 2 am and it was very slow to say the least.

Ended up with 5 squid for my efforts.  Met some real nice folks there and they all

agreed it was slow.  If you moved around alot you could pick one here and there.

Now to figure it out if possible.  It was clear last night (weatherman said it would be

partly cloudy) and the moon was big and bright so maybe all that light kept them scattered.

Then there's the dark side, Is it over, will there be a fall fishery?  Next week with the new moon

may change all that or confirm the sad news.  Nice meeting Gunslinger and Chris last night

and had a good time exchanging info and fishing together.

Went out of Point Judith today, got some sea bass and fluke,  got to say the whole

squid (small ones) took the biggest sea bass and dropped a doormat at the boat,

the SOB had all of squid in his mouth except for the hook and he wouldn't let go till he

got to the surface.  Asked everyone I met down there if they had seen any squid in

the pond and they all said no squid.  It never started down there and now it looks like

its getting thin enough to say it may be over.  Hope there's something to try for in the fall.

It seems to me there no sure time, although the action does seem to be best around

high tide and the outgoing.  A cold front moved through while fishing yesterday and

it actually shut the bite down for a couple hrs till it warmed again and the bite picked

back up.  Started fishing about and hr before hi-tide and for 3-4 hrs after.  Find some

rock piles or "humps" on the bottom in about 50-60 ft of water and most likely you will

find them.

Never went to Beverly for squid before. Might try it next weekend. Do I have to bring a lantern or is the pier lighted?

No extra lights needed, the pier & surrounding areas are well lit..

Thanks for your help gunslinger. Think I'm going to give it a go next weekend, the new moon and tide schedule seem to work out great. It's an extra 20 min drive for me but will be worth it not to have to deal with lanterns and if there is squid. Do you think I could get a couple dozen if I stayed there from high to low tide?

The Salemnews articles is bogus about the squid population explosion FROM CAPE COD to what ever ---------

But an explosion of squid in the Cape?

I don't think so the writer either did not do her research or just exaggerated the Cape squid explosion in population.

Nevertheless an interesting situation with the north shore I 'll be heading up there.

There are no squid explosion in Cape cod this

year or even RI.

You fellows squid chaser know that.

Nothing worse than losing your credibility!

Thank you, Gunslinger for the link.

The east end of the canal was loaded with squid until they changed the lights. As for the rest of the cape and definitely RI it's been horrible.

I was down there in the east end on my boat for about 2hours did not catch any squid so I gave up. That was back in May I didn't try again after that. That trip was based on the Cape fishing article, which was not credible.

How much did you catch at the east end Anthony0803 before the lights went out ?

I could count on half a bucket. But there were about 5 or 6, 3 bucket nights. For the whole month of July I could count on a bucket a night. They changed the lights half way through August than bam..... Now I'm looking at a dozen if I stay there the whole tide period.
