Hi guys I am totally new to fishing and crabbing please bear with me.



Just recently did some crabbings at the Woodman Point jetty but am REALLY interested to catch some squid. Has anyone has any luck catching squids from the same jetty? I have been there a few time already but never seen anyone caught a squid so was wondering if it is the right place for squidding.



I have seen many squid being caught on the Busselton jetty I think due to the seagrass/weeds that is present just below the jetty but no seaweed at Woodman Point jetty. Is there any other places around metro area (not Rockingham) that is ideal for squidding?



Any help will be very much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Hi Vernon,



You wont have much luck at woodman point jetty, you are better off trying the amo jetty down near woodies. You don't have to go very far out either 1/4 of the way out max as squid are plentiful in the 2-4m range, have even caught them in much shallower water as well. There are a few other posts in the wa section about places to go squidding, check em out. You are obviously a shore based fisho? Or do you have a boat? Reason being is that there are not too many squid being caught shore based at this time of the year. You can still get squid but they are not as many around as there are around march-april. Hope this helps.

also it helps if you cast out around structure such as pylons, weed, or broken weedy/ sandy ground.

Thanks for the replies and tips Peter! Finally some feedback for the few days old post lol.



I am not exactly sure if the jetty I go to is call Woodman point jetty or ammo jetty. It is not the one where lots of people do kite surfing but the next one to the north but before the one near the caravan park. It is outside of the recreational park where you can find lots of BBQ pit. Which one is called ammo jetty and where is it?



How come there is no squid at this time of the year? I just came back from Busselton jetty about 2 weeks ago I saw people catching PLENTY of squids they are all over the place but so different here in the metro area. I also went to palm beach jetty and south mole in freo to try my luck but not a single sign of squid.



I am shore based don't have a boat. Is South mole or north mole fremantle ok for fishing squid as well?

vernon, don't get me wrong there are squid in the metro waters it's just they are harder to catch at this time of year, i went squidding the other day at north mole and only got 2 in about 2.5 hours, hard work! North and south mole are great places to get squid from, you would have better luck trying places such as ammo jetty and just off the beaches around woodman point. I think the jetty you are describing is the ammo jetty, it is to the north of woodman point.

I went down to Hillarys boat harbour on the northern breakwater and caught a nice sized squid only 5 mins after getting there. Thought I would be in for a treat but I should have just went home after that. Spent the next 3 hours trying to catch anything. Nothing was biting, Few people catching some small herring but overall, it was a bad night.



Tide was way out though so hopefully more luck if it was in.



Thinking about trying for squid after work though. Not sure where I want/can go. I work in the city and wonder where the closest place to catch a squid from is. Anyone tried anywhere along mounts bay road or Matilda Bay?

Lucky you Aaron at least you caught one. I still have not caught one yet after so many tries. I wish I know more places I can go to around metro area... so far not many replies to this post. Please let me know if you find a nice spot.

Hi all, never caught a squid before... amazed to find this forum, and have read much.



Very much hoping to make my first catch soon. Went down to Fremantle on saturday and had a go off the platform near the E-shed markets, right up the ocean end, but the water was completely dead. At least I wasn't alone, both the north and south moles were completely quiet that night for everything.



Could anyone give me a few pointers?

What sort of seasonality is there for squid in Perth?



I work in Bentley, and I don't mind dropping by freo or cottlesloe or something after work, or if there are good spots in the river..

Hey jeremiah im from Perth too, I tried the moles earlier this week but came up with nothing. Usually the moles are a good spot to try but I think with all the silt being stirred up from the dredging thats happening in the Swan the squid have vacated to cleaner waters.

I just cast which ever side depending on which way the wind is blowing. I like to cast with the wind behind me (casting into the wind shortens my cast and creates a big belly in my line when retrieving.)

Fished just out of Hillarys to the north last weekend and got a number of squid, one would have pushed 750g, also huge numbers of herring/gardie/yakkas - just add burley.

The Cott is a great spot for squid. fish off the rocks and cast to the south. Use a light egi (jig) or you'll foul up on the reef/weed. Another good tactic is to put out a live herring on a clear day. Watch it and any squid around should have a look. Once squid is spotted cast a jig behind it and work it past. Herring might also pick up a salmon this time of year.



Autumn and winter are squid time.

Well after my first attempt down at Hillarys I managed to catch a few more squid. I found I was getting less after sunset except one time when I was trying for Tailor and noticed a squid trailing my bait in. I swapped back to a jig and jagged him straight away. I think the squid was liking the real fish more. Tried one of those jigs where you skewer your own fish on another time but didn't get anything. There are squid out there at least. Might have something more to do with my technique then anything. Managed to catch heaps of Herring down there and a few Tailor also. We've caught two 44cm Tailors and a 34cm also. Haven't been out for a while now.

Top stuff aaron! Its great going home with a feed of herring and a squid for some fresh squid rings. Yum! I would def use squid jigs as opposed to the baited prongs they just don't catch as much as a well worked jig in my experience.

Any Squid you say ? haha well well i've finally opened my account down at woodsman point recently.. about the size of a small mineral bottle but i just got one and was contented with it. cheerios, thats my report for now
