eating raw squid

squid sperm-bag punctured wound

A 57-year-old woman experienced pain from foreign bodies in her oral cavity after eating raw squid. Examination of her oral cavity revealed 20-30 small foreign bodies embedded in the mucous membrane. After all the foreign bodies were pulled out, the pain was allayed and the wounds eventually healed. The foreign bodies, 5mm in length, were white and of elongated conical shape. Under microscopy, a large number of sperms was observed in the bodies. These foreign bodies were determined to be sperm-bags of the squid. It is supposed that this woman ate squid with spermatophores, thereafter sperm-bags were discharged from the spermatophores into her oral cavity. Although only a few similar cases heretofore have been found, it might increase among the Japanese who frequently eat raw squid.

Hi, Gren..

Last week, I was cleaning squid that I caught at GI newport. And I noticed there was a sperm-bags which look like white bucktail feather. And it was moving like parasite and actually it hurts my finger. I tried to look for what it was and I found this article at Japanese scholarly information site.

i live in japan and we eat raw sqid all the time. if it is fresh it is generally not chewy, but sometimes big pieces can be a bit much. when i first started eating it i only ate it if it was cut into small strips, then you can pick up a few strips at a time and it is not so hard to eat. i eat the dried squid straight out of the packet, though sometimes i cook it if i am at a bbq, its great with mayo and chilli. Over here i always see people eating fish, octopus and other things straight out of the ocean, they dont always freeze it, but i have no idea about worms and stuff? next time try raw horse or deer, that will get u going!

Japanese will eat almost anything raw <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Although there are some fish you will rarely see on the sushi menu. One of them is Mackeral. Basicly, if it is caught and eaten the same day you should be OK but their shelflife is extreemly short so most people cook or marinate them first.

I can eat raw squid if it's very fresh and properly prepared. Getting the skin off is the hardest part. I think it also depends on what type of squid. Most people over here would say the big-finned reef squid tastes best.

Big-finned reef squid is "AORI-IKA", isn't it?

I'm a Japanese who lives in NY.

Have you tried "OKIZUKE"?

Thay's right, aori. I'm from New Zealand but living in Nagoya. Went down to Minami-ise-cho in Mie with a friend. I was egging and he was using yaen. He got 4 and I got none <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> He was kind enough to give me the 2 smallest ones ^^

This year alot of people are getting 2 and 3 kilo aori it seems but mainly with yaen.

The thought of OKIZUKE just makes my stomach churn 笑

Okizuke is basicly squid pickled in its own guts AFAIK. Hope I'm wrong <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Minami-ise-cho is about 150k south of here. Take Route 23 down to Matuzaka and change to R42. That will get you into the area, from there, there are hundreds of rocky bays. Depending on traffic, its about a 4 hour drive.

Wrap the squid in Sesame Leaf. and put that korean hot sauce on it....it loooks like ketchup...but is a mild hot sauce. I bumped into some Korean people and they turned us on to it.....was great....sweet...not TOO chewy...but kinda chewy.

I explain what "OKIZUKE" is.

First of all, prepare middle sized plastic bowl. And put 500ml of soy source, 500ml of sweet sake called "MIRIN", 500ml of Japanese sake. Mix it. Make sure lid is tight closed.

Bring it to the spot where you fish squid.

When you catch squid, put it into the bowl while squid is alive.

Squid drinks up mixed sauce right away and die.

Don't worry that squid's ink come out to the sauce. It gets black.

Let it be for at least 3 hours.

Go home and cut the squid with gut.

Hopefully, eat them with your favorite Sake.

Raw squid is tasty.

When in Japan, near my wife's hometown of Fukuoka, we went to a restaurant she liked for octopus. After a long taxi ride, it was closed. So taxi driver took us to another restaurant/ryokan.

Outside near the entrance was a closed tank, with squid swimming in it.

So of course for appetizer we had squid sashimi. The server warned us that sometimes it is so fresh, it still pulses from nerve impulses.

It was tasty.

As to the other 'interesting' sashimi how about ostrich sashimi? I did have some shark sashimi, it was pretty good too.

Oh because raw squid (ika) when done right is absolute heaven. A texture to die for, and such a subtle and sweet taste!

Mmmm-hmm.
that's how i use to eat it. also dried squid ... which normally should be boiled or fried, i like it chewy <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

is there any risk with eating dried squid (which should normally be cooked) from the package ???
I lived in Cha-Am Thailand for ten months about two years ago. Street vendors sell sun dried squid that they heat on a grill then run through a press to tenderize it a bit. Its squid jerky and it is quite tasty but still a bit chewy. I ate it almost every day, it was a nice snack.
