...so if the locals aren't chasing the squid, then who operates the squid boats?

Fished the peir from 2 - 8 am this morning.



Started slow with 3 in 4 hours then had a good patch with 4 in 10 mins. All varying in size from 30cm hoods down to 15cm. Was standing room only for most of the night.



All caught on baited jigs.

I cant wait for the holidays to be over so I can hit the place again but at the moment you couldnt get on with a machine gun

There is no way I would ever contemplate going down Queenscliff at the moment but I know that once the Hols are over and things go a bit quiet then the fishing fires up again at both the pier and boat harbor

REPORT 31/1/06

Fished Queenscliff 31/1/06 from 10pm till 4am, caught 6 squid approx 500grams each,just as many lost due to bad hook ups

Weather forcast was for s/sw winds but upon arrival winds where E/NE

Other anglers managed a few each up to around the kilo mark

The squid where definately around and while some were timid other struck hard at lures and baits, Red lures and jigs baited with bluebait did the damage.

The shallows just past the first light held many small squid as well with one young lady taking a bag of small to medium squid in a matter of an hour.

Definately worth the early morning trip if your headed down this way with high tides from 2 am onwards as the week progresses

fished qeenscliff pier last sat night arrived 11pm cold dark cloudy night fished for three hours for one very small squid not much bigger than the jigg. five guys fishin next to me managed a couple of small ones...heading down next week ill post my report ....

QUEENSCLIFF PIER WAS EMPTY APART FROM ONE COUPLE FISHING UNDER THE SECOND LIGHT .

FREEZING COLD AND AT 2AM NOTHING FOR 2 HOURS THEN BANG TO SMALL SQUID IN ABOUT A MINUTE THAT WAS ALL FOR THE NIGHT....STILL THE COLD WEATHER IS MUCH BETTER THAN THE BIG CROWDS IN SUMMER TIME ....

I calculated by the times you stated that you maybe fishing at the wrong times



Fish two hours before the high tide a good time at queenscliff in the winter is with a high tide after middnight.

The size is a bit small around the 20 cm hood length but a bag of these makes a decent meal.

Freezing is part and parcel when your fishing for squid at Queenscliff because they seem to come on the bite at 3 in the morning in the winter and the run lasts about half hour.Ive bagged out many times while suffering near hyperthermia.It is not uncommon to see schools of these small squid around the pier in the winter as they are the offspring from last years season.Most times its the last two hours of the rising tide and the first two of the run out tide that will give you results preferably with a light w/sw wind, if you have these conditions then your chance improve ten fold.



And yes its heaps better during the winter, while the squid arnt as big( but you do get the occassional monster) there arnt anywhere near as many people about,Id have to say that Ive caught my best bags when the peir was near empty



And just a word of caution being winter there will be some huge cuttlefish around the peirs as was around this time last year so watch your rods as these guys have the ability to snap rods in half

These recent reports from The Bellarine from Geoff Wilson shows that the squid are still about



Jeff Richards reports spending his free time doing a boat test over the weekend, but reports that his friend Bill Pilipasidis bagged out on southern calamari off Indented Head.



Colin Frisch reports that Noel Keneally also found the calamari off Queenscliff, and what beauties they were with some around the 2kg mark.

Could you tell me what are the likely chances of successful squid fishing in these waters during the winter months (July-August)?

Good Evening fellow squidders



Well Thursday night I took a trip down to Queenscliff and StLeonards peir's and it was very quiet considering the rest of the bay seems to be producing excellent numbers of squid with good reports coming from Frankston right around to Flinders and Indented Heads and The Bight At Queenscliff also producing good numbers of squid up to 2KG,Paul Worstling of Cranbourne bait and tackle reported customers bagging out on good sized squid at Frankston during the run out tide. again it seems those who have boats are the ones getting the squid as they seem to be shying away from the peirs, however I have had a few reports saying Flinders peir is worth the trip.



Both Queenscliff and St'Leonards have shown no signs of action with only one angler at Queenscliff getting two just on dusk,I did have two nice sized ones come and inspect my baited jig but decided they wernt that hungry and promptly took off.

However this night was not of my favoured conditions and I made the trip to see what action if any was happening there was not much evidence of squid action to be seen,hopefully that will improve in the very near future.

Well season 2006 has got off to absolute screaming start with the big spawners moving through the bay.

Both Flinders and Queenscliff have seen huge numbers caught in the last week with the bight at Queenscliff producing nice two kilo specimens on baited jigs.

Paul Wosrtling of Cranbourne bait and tackle reports that Flinders has been producing big numbers of squid with one angler landing a whopper 3.5 kilos from the peir, baited jigs and brown Hyabusa jigs are said to be the go here.



Time to get out and get onto those squid

Hi SS,

It was me who netted the 3kg squid at Flinders 2 week ends ago. Biggest one a Ive seen to date, probably a tad over 3kg. I also netted about 6 other 2kg squid. Whiting on jig's were definitly the go for the larger squid.

Went back last week end for no fish, and no locals fishing (how do they know?).

I think I'll stick to Finders for the next week or so till they move in around St Lenards. Both about the same distance from home anyway.
