Caught three squid off Mornington pier Monday night. They were all tiny.

Blowing a gale last night but the squid were on the bite. Caught half a dozen in 1.5 hours.

FISHING REPORT 14-09-06

Paul Worsteling called the shop while wandering up and down Mornington Pier on Thursday afternoon. Paul said one angler told him that he assisted another angler to land a 3 kilo snapper onto the pier on Monday. The fish took a couta head that was caught earlier that day. Paul also mentioned that on Thursday anglers that were fishing on the pier were catching squid on squid jigs and red mullet on soft plastics. There was also a pod of dolphins herding a school of baitfish at the end of the pier.

does anyone know if red mullet are good for bait for any particular species?

i caught one for the first time on friday at mornington pier.

i believe you can eat red mullet! but i never have. i actually caught one at mornington too and i was not sure what it was so i gave it away to someone else. red mullet is in the "goat fish" family.

You can definately eat red mullet, I am not a big fan of them though - they smell extremely fishy when cooking, but don't taste quite as fishy as they smell. They are prized by Greeks who use them in soups - I think AK told me that Greeks call them the 'mother in law fish' because if you want to impress your mother in law you should give her a red mullet! I caught 6 on soft plastics yesterday while fishing for snapper off Rickett's point - I reckon they are easily the prettiest fish you can catch in southern waters. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

jazman, i agree that they are one of the prettiest fish. i love the electric fluoro blue stripe pattern they have around their eyes.



alot of my best mates are Greek, so i might give em away if i catch em.... i heard red mullet also have a few bones-which is enuff to put me off. never been a fan of fish that are too bony.



maybe checkin out mornington pier today 19/9/2006 for some squid. havent been too many around . last friday i got onto a nice school of bay trout that went nutz over the soft plastics! but no squid that day.



checked portsea on sunday arvo and as soon as it started to get dark a few came on, but i dropped two and only landed one small one;-) at least its a start to the season for me i guess.

here is my fortnightly report for morninton,

Mornington is the pier to fish at the moment. Barracouta, Squid and Garfish are regularly getting caught. The Couta are best targeted with Laser Lures and Pilchard Fillets. There are also a few reports getting around of the odd 3 kg Snapper being caught from the pier.



On the boating side of things there are couta, salmon and Squid to be had in close while out deeper there is a chance of an early season snapper and some gummy sharks and the usual flathead.



The best bet to connect to one of these early season fish in this area is to use the freshest of baits, Squid would be my personal preference, followed closely by garfish.

went down to morni pier thursday arvo from around 3.30pm -sunset. was hoping to see some squid happening but nothing yet, and unfortunately no salmon for me, but hopefully the school will hang around for abit.



first time catchin them on soft plastics earlier this week;-)



as predicted right on when the sunwent down the couta came in close for a rampage and then vanished. managed 3 good sized ones going str8 to the freezer as i dont eat them. im looking forward to trying them for snapper ove rthe next few weeks.



im sure from tomorrow onwards, the squid should start picking up at the pier.

MORNINGTON:

Staff member Andrew Fallon fished before work on Thursday. He managed 10 nice

calamari to 800 grams on the brown hyabusa squid jig in 6 metres of water.

well, as i've mentioned elswhere, we fished mornington pier from about 5:45am-9:30am on wednesday morning.



plenty of couta around as the sun came up. we got 13 easily (and must have seen at least 50 come up onto the pier) before trying a little harder for more palatable species. saw a snapper and a couple of little salmon come onto the pier, but personally didn't have any luck. i reckon today would have been great, the wind really died down and it would have been nice and calm.



anyway, perhaps i'll try targeting some snapper from the pier in a couple of weeks or so.

Mt Martha

Anglers are catching the odd squid and whiting on the inshore reefs. Best time is in the late afternoon. If you are after an early season snapper try morrisons reef.



Mornington

The rocks off Mornington are the place to fish at the moment. Snapper to 20 pounds are getting caught daily. This is not a cast and hope fishery, you must put in the time and be patient. Those that are doing the time are getting the results with the average Snapper being over 6kg. The Mornington pier is still producing Barracouta, Squid and Garfish. The Couta are best targeted with Laser Lures and Pilchard Fillets.



Boat anglers are a good chance for an early season snapper. Personally I would be fishing Ansetts reef and I would be using squid and garfish as my choice baits.

MORNINGTON:

There is still respectable numbers of calamari being caught from the Mornington Pier. Squid jigs in size 1.8 and 2.0 sizes are working best. Squid are nocturnal feeders so trying fishing at dusk and into the night during a run in tide for best results.

Hi guys, I popped in at Mornington pier this evening since Mt Martha was washed out with the North Westerly wind.



We got 2 garfish and 2 small squid under the lights just on dark.



I didn't see anyone else catch anything except 1 small flathead and 1 small squid. If you stayed home, then good for you....You certainly didn't miss anything <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

MORNINGTON

Customer Lynda Hunter fished off Mornington on Sunday with a friend to land 20 calamari and twenty nice gars. I am sure the snapper won't be far away with bait like that in the bay.

we fished mornington pier on sunday afternoon (fathers day). I caught the only squid that i saw caught in the two hours we were there. Apparently theres some around, but its a matter of being there at the right time i think.

Hey ppl, I fished mornington pier last week using a brown yamashita squid jig on a snap swivel and nothing else. I fished around the pier for a bit and then went down to the very start. I started near some boats and i noticed a big group of small squid chasing my jig.

They were all real finecky and i sight fished them for about 10 minutes before one jumped on. It was small so i threw it back. There were plenty of people catching squid that night but no real big ones

Headin out to Queenscliff tonight, if the winds drop in strength as predicted it should be a productive night
