Mornington report - VIC
hii

decided to go to mornington pier early as posible got there at about 7:30 got one first cast and about 2-3 cast later i got another one they were all pretty much spread out. this girl was squidding in the far corner out to sea when she left i decided to have a crack there as soon as my jig hit the bottom i started to feel the line pulling out of my hand soo i quickly flip the bail and slowy set the hooks it put up a real good fight on my 3-5kg catana got it to the pier wasnt hoooked the best soo i had to take it down to the ladder. this guy gave me his bucket to scoop it up with.it mesured a 23cm hood pretty happy seeming the biggest i could always catch was a 18cm hood i know its not a monster to some of you but a monster to me. i treid the same place a little after had a tiny bit of interest but not enough to set the hook.used the smallest one for bait caught a little black leather jacket (released)yesterday my jig was pretty much the only jig catching soo if you go down there i highly recomend it.also my techinqe was short slowish jigs across the bottom as close as i could get it

anyways heres some pics : D

i fished mornington pier sunday arvo until monday morning. the fishing at mornington had really really died off. once the sun set, there was barely anyone on the pier. even all the boats was gone. i had the pier all to myself from midnight - 5am. alot of the people were saying squid season in mornington had finished, you be lucky to catch any.

i managed 6 that night... saw alot of fish jumping out of the water, i knew it was the salmon, threw a line out for them and got one, then they went off somewhere. also i think a seal or a dolphin was around... i heard those loud breathing noises when they blow water out of their air holes and i saw it making big circle splashes. first iv seen at mornington !

overall quiet night, not much action... you can just tell by the number of people there...

just wondering what the best jigs and rigs are for mornington pier? i am taking a few new people squid fishing and would like for them to have a good time catching a few squid...

hey there, try in the evening for best results or early morning. i would just tru qan unweighted pink or orange yamashita size 2.

but lots of people there would rather use a paternoster rig to get down deeper. in this case maybe set the sinker 1 meter deeper than the jig.

I use a 2.5 size jig at mornington pier use a good quality jig

and let it sink naturally till it hits the bottom and then work it back

slowly.

Staff members Rentlo and Adam Ring fished out from Mornington on Tuesday morning. The boys went in search of late season snapper. Although they sounded a lot of snapper, it was the coldest morning this year and the reds didn’t want to come on the bite. Instead, they boys headed in close and drifted for calamari in 5 meters of water. They ended up catching 16 calamari to 800g.

when i say unweighted i mean sinking but without the paternoster rig! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> so i am just jigging away like everyone else! no special tricks i am afraid!!!

i get it now.

you should try the japan egging style......

i haven't had much chance for squid fishing lately. though i have been buying lots of flies on ebay as i will be going on a tassie trout fishing trip later this year <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> i can tie them myself but they are very cheap on ebay so not much point me getting fur and feathers all over the house! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I am paying about 50 cents each which I think is pretty cheap <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> Though for a few flies they were closer to 1 dollar <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I hope they start arriving next week <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Hey everyone!

I haven't been on here a while or out in the water for that matter, damn flu season really got me.

I was reading some fishing reports and i heard that mornington pier is shut with no access till december <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Has anyone been out there lately and can you please confirm?
