Hi all, I had a quick shot at Mornintgon pier in the evening (last night) but had no luck with squid, nor did I see anyone else catch anything. There was lots of small pike around and I tried to catch them but my lures were too big I think. I had a couple of hits but didn't catch any of them <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> I also had a shot at Mt Martha but it was pretty quiet. I saw one guy catch a small silver trevally on bait.
Cheers, Glen

Well there was lots of people on the pier and nothing got caught (apart from a tiny flathead that hardly counts!) I think with the bad weather we had recently resulted in the water being pretty murky compared to usual and this may have affected the fishing. I also note that it was getting close to full moon so perhaps that is bad as well <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

i tried mornington pier on saturday. it was miserable cold and windy. no squid caught as far as i could see. one chap mentioned one squid being caught earlier in the day. There were a few small pike around. I brought some smaller soft plastics but still failed to catch any of them! i had 4 or 5 hits from the pike but no hook ups.
cheers, glen

Hi just joined the forum and a good one it appears to be indeed.
Not sure if this is the right spot but... Just got back from The Mornington Area. Tried Mornington Pier Sat morn, got about 6 small arrow.
Went to Portsea pier this morn at 6am, lots of old lads on the jetty. Got a couple of small occy, two medium calamari before 8:30am. Then all the older wiser lads left the pier and half an hour later bang on the change of tide we landed 3x 2kg Calamari, and 8 medium calamari. Looked like a school moved in they hit hard for 20 minutes then they all went silent for an hour or so.
Off topic, how do I change my viewing of the forums to display the latest post first so?
Cheers,
nala

hi nala, thanks for the fishing report.
to answer your question, you cannot sort the topics with the newest topics at the top. however, you can click on the "orange button" (see below) next to each topic to see the new posts in that topic.
<<< This orange button will appear next to topics that have new posts in them and if you click on it, it will take you straight to the latest posts in that topic!
It is also worth knowing that the "View New Posts" link at the top of the page is very useful!

Mikii, I am no expert when it comes to squid in VIC, the report I posted was the best day I have had in ages. The only advice I can offer is... tough it out... We were the only ones on the pier after 9am, we got enough small hook ups to keep us interested and as I mentioned, at the change of tide (10am) it all caught fire. I can say that, in the time that we were there with the 'old school' long pole guys, we landed 3 to one in our favour. We were doing the ol 'pause an retieve' method using good quality jigs, Yozuri in blue and dark colors, the guy that landed the most had a yamishita (spelling?) gold and brown, and casted inside the 'L' shape of the pier.
good luck

How about the tide? And some people said full moon is good too, isn't it?

Don't bother with full moon. It won't help you.

hi goal, thanks for the report. did anyone else catch anything? the squid at mornington can be a bit tricky/finicky. I think they are over educated! sometimes a smaller jig may help but not always <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

Quote:MORNINGTON PIER:
Numbers of squid have been caught this week of the pier with the best jigs being the 1.8 and 2.0 yamashitaâs in pink or the clicks jigs in 2.0 in the darker natural colours. If your after a feed or some fresh bait squid fishing at the moment is definitely worth a try.

Hi all
Went to mornington pier on sat morning, thought i'd try my luck with squidding since i hadn't gone in ages.
Got there about 8am, on right side infront of Hasta La Vista most of the time... didn't catch anything, but the lady next to me caught about 5 in a row, she had a bright pink 2 or 1.5 not sure what make though.
As soon as Wild Thing left i threw a line in next to the platform and caught 2 decent ones within 15 mins. Stayed another hour then left. Had salt and pepper squid that night!
Looking out my window at work this morning and all i kept thinking about was it is good squid weather! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

yeah my parents went out about 3 weeks ago. battled the rainy weather. mornington was doing very well in march. my parents went every weekend and bag out each. 30 squid between my parents and my brother. i went 2 weeks ago, and only caught 10 between 3 people. they said other people caught way more than they did, but they kept their limits and went home happy.
i think its abit quiet now...or i think best weather is when its cloudy and maybe light rain.

I went with my brother to mornington pier again and there was fresh ink everywhere on the pier, looked like mascare from a video game only ink <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
Hardly any wind, clear water (really clear), overcast with patches of sun.
We went set up just on the right side of the plattform for wild thing it was only 3 meters wide but enough room not to get tangled. My brother was trying out his new silver jig, an egi i think, can't remember the make.
Anyways, he cast it, let it sink, and reeled it in a little cause he had too much line out to jig and there was a weight on it. He's first though was nah, can't be, please don't snag. Pulled it up and nice steam of ink followed. first cast!! it was awesome, he hadn't even jigged it yet.
my first cast i jigged a few times and when i was nearly at the pier it snagged and i thought, oh crap then it pulled and i thought oh crap! reeled it in gently even though it was pulling away pretty hard, felt like a big squid. I was going really slow but it still ripped it's tentacles off and freed itself. next cast i reallized my drag was pretty tight cause of the car trip <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />
next few cast was a little quite as i kicked myself. all that ink in the water warning all his squiddy friends.
Then followed a double hook up! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />
Quiet again we left to eat breakfast at hungry jacks that's the great thing about mornington when the squid's about you have as much chance of catching or not catching them all day <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
Got back and got 3 more good ones. Everyone pretty much had an inky bag all along the pier. Left just before lunch. Long winded report, sorry... but hey for those interested apparently there was a high pressure trought over melbourne i'm going to try again next H to see if its consistant.
