Mornington report - VIC
Hey everyone!

I haven't been on here a while or out in the water for that matter, damn flu season really got me.

I was reading some fishing reports and i heard that mornington pier is shut with no access till december <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Has anyone been out there lately and can you please confirm?
Was there on Friday night, yes the main pier is closed from th ecarpark and looks like it will not be ready by summer, small jetty on the right and the main harbour wall at the end of the car park is still accessable though, we did find that the pole driver and equipment working on the pier had left the water some what disturbed, we only fished for about 20 minutes, no squid for us, there were some fresh ink marks on the ground. Went to Blairgowrie from there and landed 12 but no giants only calamari with hoods around the 15-25cm mark
Best Regards

Went to mornington today with the family, got there about 5 in the afternoon. Fished the end of the small pier and got 5 squids ( 25-30cm hood ) and dropped one.....was a good day

Hi AK

Nice work with the arrow. I got one down at flinders on a silver whiting on Saturday. I reckon pound for pound they fight much better than calamari. I don't want to steal your snapper secrets (actually, I do!)......but are there any snapper about in PPB yet? I heard of some guys getting them at the top of Western Port Bay on the weekend, but I haven't heard any good reports for Port Philip (sorry for chatting about non-squid fishing here!)

Cheers

Hi I'm brand new here and I am just learning about squid fishing. I got excited when I saw a question I could answer, so here goes. My father in law fishes at Mornington regularly and was complaining last Wed (22 Dec 2010) that the pier is still not finished and doesn't look like it will be finished anytime soon so he cant take us fishing there yet. He does still fish off the little jetty but he said he hasn't had much luck there. Hope this helps Merry Xmas

Hey Jules! Welcome aboard.

I was actually down there yesterday showing my fiance's parents around and all that is left of the first part of the pier is a bunch of stumps/pillons. Well for the first 10 metres of pier at least. I hope they get back to work after new years day!

Cheers, Glen

I heard someone mentioned it was meant to finish in December in time for summer. Usually the general rule is to add another 1-2 months. but from what glen saw, i think it would be another 6months, maybe more. queenscliff took around 11months.

the works of the pier was bad timing !

Hi Glen Thanks for the welcome, we were down there yesterday too after visinging in laws for chrissy and were surprised at how little work seemed to have been done <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />...... I just got my first fishing rod and a squid jig this christmas and am hanging to try it in the water. Kids think it's funny that Mum has finally got her own rod (Im 45) I am determined to end up a better fisherwoman than thier Dad......he doesnt think so but were looking forward to the competition...he's going down!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> thanks again for the welcome

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on the best places to fish around the Mornington area - we are driving from Melbourne so we are looking for somewhere between Melbourne and Mornington.

Thanks in advance!

Looking at this board no one has mentioned locations in Melbourne for Squid fishing due to the pollution.

Thanks for the reply.

From Brighton to black rock you may get some.

You can't just expect a place to always have squid also. I tried 6 times before I even caught 1 squid. And when I caught that one, I drove to Sorrento, over 100k's from me.

I usually have 1 rod in the water with bait to catch what ever is out there and a squid rod for all the times in between.

Hi guys, I just joined in to this website & this is my 1st post. Thought I'd let you all know something which took place on Sunday the 6th March. I went over to the Mornington Pier around 1am with my mate Rod. There was another guy getting out of his car with fishing gear, so I chatted with him where to cast as the main Pier was still blocked off. He was saying the small Jetty where the Charter Boats are is the only option, & there are small Calamari there. This guy used 2 rods for Calamari using 2.5inch multi color jigs about 1.5m under a float. We only had 3 rods in total, 2 for Calamari using 1.25inch all red or all orange or all pink jigs cast out 8m & let sink to the bottom & then intermittently wound in. I did try a 3.5inch YoZuri natural jig just in front of the Jetty at first, there was a Calamari about the same size hanging around it trying to figure out what to do with it. Thats when I swapped onto the smaller jigs as I gathered the Calamari were small. Anyways, started catching Calamari from 5-7inch hood length. Our 3rd rod was out with a 2 hook paternoster rig with small size 8 circle hooks with a thin Calamari ring on them. I did take a couple of Garfish & a couple of small bait Calamari with me. The Garfish bait did not work that night, yet managed to catch 1 x 35cm Flathead & 1 x 35cm KG Whiting on Calamari ring bait. The other guy after seeing me catching the Calamari & fish, got rid of his floated 2.5inch jigs & borrowed one of my 1.25inch jigs & cast out like me & ended up catching I believe 5 or 6 Calamari 5-7inch hood length. He also deployed one of his rods with fresh calamari tentacles as bait & managed to land 3 x 35cm KG Whiting. We were there till 6am, & was getting bigger Calamari by this time as they were around 8inch hood length, yet had to pack up & return home. Total catch was 16 x Calamari of 5-8inch hood length, also 1 x Flathead & 1 x KG Whiting.

It really is sad & inconvenient not being able to access the main Pier, yet there is no reason why we can't get around it in a little boat, right? This week ALDI stores has 3m basic inflatable boats with Oars & pump, all for AU$59 I believe. Anyone very keen can easily use one of these or similar & paddle around the Pier & look for squid if they really want. I'm thinking of taking my little 4m boat if the weather permits, & going there on the coming weekend as my daughter loved the Calamari, will try to get more fresh ones for her. If the weather turns out too rough for the little boat, I'll still go & fish off the Jetty.

Sorry for the long post, yet had to say a long story. Take care & be safe around the water, bye for now, Shan.
