Difference Between Calamari And Squid?

I catch squid for bait,mostly for Mulloway and Kingfish.They are VERY particular about what they'll eat, thats why I have to catch it myself to make sure it's fresh. The most popular (with the fish) ,is ,in order cuttlefish calamari and lastly arrow squid

Are there any difference between southern calamari and cuttlefish regarding to their feeding behavior, habitat and food preference (or jig preference <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> )? Is there a more reliable method to specifically target one species over the other? As a start, I found that cuttlefish seems to like green jigs in the area i fish, and kingfisher suggested that more cuttlefishes are caught on unworked jigs.

Cuttlefish are most easily targeted in well lit areas of shallow water at night (1-2m) I use a small jig as most of these cuttles are small2-6cm bodies.Flip the jig across the water near the top and allow to settle on the bottom every 1-2m leave it for 5-10sec watch carefully to see if and dark shapes move across the bottom(most important) .If you see this leave the jig stationary ,the cuttle hunt differently to squid,they stalk their prey like a cat.then pounce on it. Their grip is so strong that unless you "strike " hard they will hold the jig body so tight that they do not get caught on the spikes and will release their grip as you try to lift them out of the water.Whereas squid tentacles slip down the body of the jig as it is pulled through the water.Cuttlefish tentacles are extemely tough and there is very little risk of them tearing .Because of the concentrated nature of cuttlefish ink they are far more effective in attracting predator species such as Kingfish than "normal" squid

As mentioned in some posts above, Calamari is actually a type of squid identifiable by its wings which extend the entire length of the cone. Technically, cutting any old squid into rings does not make it Calamari but this has become the most commonly used application for the word.



Real Calamari's higher market value is due to it having superior eating qualities over other varieties of squid ie: it is less rubbery when cooked.

Calamari is a type of squid. Its like a squid, its generation and eating and life everthing is like squid but are somewhat different in look.

I am new to squidding  & wonder if they can be caught off the beach during the day or do I need a jetty or boat & is there any minimum size like there is with finfish in Western Australia ?
