Port Stephens Squid - NSW

Since shifting to the Port Stephens area in NSW mid coast, just recently and have wet a line a couple of times I have encountered a small squid, between 6 - 8 inches, that follow the bait up.



I am told that the dolphins in the bay thrive on the squid. Are these small squid OK for the table ??? or are the squid the dolphins chase bigger ????



I mainly encounter them when drifting, probably when over the weed beds in shallower waters than the middle of the bay area.

Assuming you are talking about calamari (side wings go all the way along the mantle, not just at the top) then ..... yahoo .... any size is edible. Just clean and cook the same day. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':angry:' />



If small squid are about, then big ones are also about. Their life span is about two years and yes all marine creatures love squid.



The squid spawn about November and you should catch good size then.



You are fishing in the right spot over weed beds.

Thx Wes...I'm not sure exactly what they were like as I didn't land one...not wanting to catch something that I didn't know about and wouldn't eat, but now I will go and chase them to find out exactly what they are....and get back with a description.

Hi all,

Just wandered across this post, I live in pot stephens and have caght quite few squid, best spots are boat harbour shoal bay, barry park (caught 25 squid there just yesterday) and boulder bay in fingal bay. I have had best results at all these spots using pink and green jigs at the hour before dark, but I also know of others that claim the best times are dark using glow sticks.

Good info matt, and very generous. People are understandably protective about locations on these sites.

My friends think I'm a little disturbed because I actually drive from the Central Coast to Port Stephens to squid for the table and bait. It's about a 2 hour drive. I've had my best rock platform squidding there, for one reason: when I just couldn't land a squid off the rocks, a local kindly pointed out exactly where to cast. He caught plenty, so I knew they were there. I find it's the surefire way to learn to get your lure technique right, by practising how to catch them when you know they're in front of you. Now that I know my technique works, I spend more of my time out searching for more spots of my own. Also on working a new technique for a particular spot. It's a slow process, especially with the big seas, but I've now got his backup spot and a few solid ones of my own. Pure trial and error, as the weed beds are a little hard to see from 50-60m away, but I'm gradually getting there.

Anyway, another question for Matt. If inside and outside Boat Harbour are too rough to squid from the rocks, what are the next best options? Is four mile worth a go? Any advice, even vague areas, appreciated.

Im happy I could help you out, I would say if it is too rough inside and outside of boat harbour the best places would be inside of the harbour at Shoal Bay (drifting between the moored boats) or In the sheltered part of Fingal Bay (AKA Kiddies Corner, fishing along the edge of the rocks and sand). I have also had some good results lately at the heads at Shoal Bay (North Head).

Hi guys, i've been a keen fisho for a few years now. I started my fishing career down the south coast and loved the rock fishing then moved to sydney and felt lost at first only to realise tyhe rock fishing was just as good if not better but now have migrated even further up the coast to nambucca way and so far am not very keen with the rock fishing but i would love to find a place to catch some squid off the rocks/breakwall. does anyone know if there are places around here where you can catch squid? any info gratefully received? I'm new here and just want to let everyone know that I been catching big squids down at Port Stephens.

Yozuri and Kamikazi squid jigs

Maglite 4D Cell

...and heaps of different squid jigs.



I have good lucks using the Kamikaze Asarika size #4.0 - I love this model. Believe it or not I caught a total of 12kls of squid using this model.



I'm a computer programmer/soft dev and I squid fish only during weekends because I'm working 5 days a week. Every week i caught 3 big squids, weighing 1.something kls each.



I'll post some photos of my caught here soon...At the moment I'm looking for a rugged camera coz atm I'm using my phone camera w/c s*cks.



Tips: Know your squid jig(s) especially the bouyancy. Yozuri/Yamashiti/Kamikaze they have great bouyancy. 1 metre per sec would do me.



I have great success with cloth squid jigs and few in the lasers.

ASE90, I bought it on ebay (link below) for AU $9.03 and free postage. Get the size #4 if you want catch big squids.
