Botany Bay Squid - NSW

Had a one or two bites on an orange jig fishing of the rocks at Long Bay. No takers. No bites on any other colour jig. I think the rain has driven them to deeper waters.



It had rained in the early morning and conditions were overcast with more rain setting in at about 2pm - at which point i headed off.

Hello all, im from Sydney Botany region and I currently went to jibbon beach which is located in the national park near bundeena, I caught a wrasse about 15cm and then bang a 45cm southern calamari squid. As you could imagine I was excited!, i was just about to bring the squid in and i lost it. I kept trying but I think I scared it off when I tried to gaff it. I was wondering if any one knew any places around botany to go squid fishing because jibbon is too far. I noticed la perouse, was a good squid fishing spot but i don't know were to fish their, the type of squid jigs and the equipment I need. I usually use a 12ft beach rod of the rocks, with 14lb line, is this good to use for squid? I was wondering that if any one could recommend some good squid jigs to use in this area. If any information could be given I would appreciate it allot.

is it because the water in botany bay is not that clear that the squid are not around the land based scene.I know you can get them off a boat but what about land based.probably few and far between eh?

I've been a few times lately (off the wall of the old power station at yarra bay) and also yesterday on the back facing the island and and nothing at all. Was fishing of the wall a few days back and there was some old timers with the jigs walking up and down the wall. I watched them and if they hooked up I was ready to throw in but they did'nt seem to get much either.



Not sure why just haven't had much luck the last few weeks.



If you still wanted any help (not that I am much at the moment) I go to the bay a lot either with my kids after school during the week or normally sunday arvo I could point you vaguely in the right direction.

Have been trying my hand at squid fishing for the first time over the last 2 weekends, and so far so good. The following were caught using a full pilchard on a long shank squid hook (or whatever the correct name is) Haven't had any luck spinning for them yet.



Managed to catch these 2 on my first trip out. Small I know, but I can't complain for a Squid Fishing Noob. These were eaten raw with a side serve of Korean chilli paste korea: . I have eaten raw squid before, but it didn't even come close to eating these within an hour of being caught.



Last friday (11/3), I managed to pull in this sucker!!!! Only 1 caught on the night, out of 5 people fishing for them <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Failed to let it discharge all of it's ink though, as you can see.

I'm finding myself getting quite addicted to this, much to the dismay of my wife <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Nice catch Dolgogi, I know what you mean about being addicted to squid fishing - I remember when I caught my first squid, that was all I fished for the next few months!

I've only ever tried them raw when I went fishing with an 'expert' mate who had a rule that if you lost a squid but ended up with a tentacle left on the jig that you had to eat the tentacle. I had to eat it without the benefit of chili paste....it was not good <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

I didn't eat the tentacles raw, only the body. It's cut about 5mm thick, maybe a little less using a sashimi knife and is about 4cm in length.

Tentacles were saved for another dish.

You can try the bridge or the rocks at Bear island.

Through the week is best as it's fairly quiet. If you go Friday night or weekends, you will have to contend with a lot of people fishing on the bridge.

The first 2 were from the rocks to the west of the bridge, and the one on the 2nd pic was landed from up on the bridge.



The guy who introduced me to this type of fishing (stop lurking YellowSnapper), has caught heaps up there, including a rather large cuttlefish.

I was wondering when the best season is to squid in Botany Bay? I put many hours in for only small size squid.i've been told that the cooler winter months are more appropriate for better size squid. Can anyone help me with this area? thank you

Majority upto a kilo have come from within 2km of Port Botany Heads. basically anywhere there is good bottom cover around dusk is yeilding great cathces. make sure you release those massive cuttlefish you'll come across too!

Went jigging in La perouse today. only caught 2 small one. a guy was there for about 2 hours and nailed almost 20! He is a real pro and he acturally sell them to tackle shop as fresh bait ~~. He used a yo-zuri orange 2.0, and both of my squid was also caught on a yo-zuri orange 2.0. hi all

last night tuesday 31/07/07 climbed through to bridge at bare island,La perouse, only got 1 calamari there in 15mins, moved onto the island proper(sea side) cast wide with 3.5 shimano adjustale squid jig, went deep got 2 southerns in about 40mins not much else, was a bit wet due to the size of the tide! Tried the bridge again briefly on the way out ... no follows.. gave it about 15-20 mins then headed to the reef area around boat shed cafe for about half hour nothing there either.. still ... managed a few for that session not so bad after all..

p.s. anyone else been out... maybe kurnell or the hacking.. any reports????

i dont normally take pics of my captures.. however i will begin to take pics and post them up here..

Cheers for the report! I've never had any luck in la perouse when the tide is strong, so i think you did well with 3 squids. How big are they? probably decent size too since you landed them on size 3.5 jigs! well done! By the way, did you spot the squids when you are fishing on the bridge?

the squid were not over the kilo mark but close enough the bigger of the three was about 800gr, still a top size for strip baits when chasing the jewies!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

the squid were not visible from the bridge, just work your jig from about 10-15mtrs straight out and bring it through the sandy patch which seperates the thick kelp beds.

Went out for an early session in hope to stock up on some kingie baits <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> windy and rainy was able to pull out four little inkers

The two bigger ones I had salt pepper squid in mind but no they all got the vaccy treatment

Mate it was good to catch a few the other morning . I went again yesterday only to have the wind up and rain a little heavy so called it quits after two hours with no squid .Cant wait to get out again

Very easy . The only thing you need is the machine then you have to buy the special bags which I think are worth the $$

Only the thing I do is put them in the vacuum bag and then sit them in the freezer to harden a little so you get a better seal
