Couldnt help it had to get out for another Squid session <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> Got my first little Inker first cast <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> on the 3.5 Daiwa in Fire

I thought thats a good start then that was it for that spot jigged for about 2o minutes or so then went to the next spot after several cast bringing in the 3.5 jig I had a school of little Inkers try and round up my jig .No hits I cast out again no interest . So I went to my jig case and pulled out the baby of the daiwa jigs I think 1.5 0r 1.8 . First cast I let it sink and the little Inkers couldnt help but to have a go. The other seven were caught on this little Jig at three other spots I fished from about 3.30pm up to high tide around 830 . One thing I noticed which I haven't seen before was baby baby squid a little school of them swimming around they wouldnt of been longer than a match stick <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

You are killing them Ben! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> Great bag mate. From the look of the runner visible in one of your shots it looks like you're using a proper squidding rod - are you getting more since you started using it?

Mate I am loving my squidding great fun thats all I am fishing for . I need to get my kayak out and get some Ink on her as My new spot I could really cover some ground of the Yak . Yep I bough the gladiator rod last month I am getting used to it as it is the lighter one of the Gladiator eggi rods . And I am used to a whippy rod .At first when I would get a touch I would loose the squid as my sloppy rod a daiwa pro caster all a squid has to do is take the jig and the rod would have some give in it but this new rod is a little stiffer but I am now getting used to it I caught the 10 on saturday on it. today I caught the one on it and the other seven on the daiwa Pro caster . I do like the new rod. I might get the next one up which is a little stiffer to be able to cast out some bigger jigs. Have you been getting a few Inkers ?

Great to see you are enjoying your squidding mate, there is nothing else quite like it <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> I have got that flame coloured jig in size 3, one of my faves. Have you seen the Japanese squidding movies on youtube where they use the really violent jigging action? I think that is what the proper squidding rods are more designed to do, do you ever work your jig this way? 90% of the squid I get are a a jig mooched along slow and deep.

Check out the way this guy flogs his jig!

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=TKwDW-Teoa0

I'd like to give that technique a bit more of a go.

I am seriously tempted to get one of those gladiator rods, but I'm not sure if I will get enough use out of it to justify the purchase. Living in Canberra I am about 2 hours from the coast, and have been splitting my weekend trips between the coast and Jindabyne in the snowies. So I only get a chance to go squidding once every 2 or so weeks......I used to go 3 or more times a week when I lived in Melbourne! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Mate most of my jigging is easy easy some times like today I will jig non stop for over four hours or more so I couldn't handle going crazy like some of the clips you see on you tube. Every now and again as you know the daiwa have the rattle I will give it some sharp jerks I dont know if the rattle does anything but I think it does . My jigging technique is with the tip down at my toes nearly touching the water and gentle but jerky jigs back. I need to get a small rod for my kayak to do the same technique I am used to . I think I got into that habbit from mainly squidding from the bridge leaning over rod dangling over and casting out and twitching back .It is funny as I used to only use little jigs like I caught seven of today catch on but since we have been having the windy weather I have gone to 3.5 and stayed with it as i like to cast out far and jig back and really cover the deeper water compared to like today casting out the little jigs and slowly slowly letting the jig sink I like it for close in jigging even better if the water is clear and I can see the jig sink. But I think I like the bigger jigs and knowing that when i do jig back that it still stays down compared to the smaller jigs so light when I jig back they rise to quick . But in saying that the good old small jig did the damage today .Jazzman what is your prefered jigging technique do you jig from the side or do you ever jig with the tip down at your feet . ? I still like jigging from the side aswell .

hi Ben, those squids look great. I notice where you go, you catch alot of calamari, where i go i catch mostly arrow squid. Today i caught 3, same with yesterday, and i catch mine at night, i notice also your catching yours in the day. I jig sometimes with the rod facing down, and sometimes to the side, i find the side better, but i am having the same problem you are having with the stiffness of the gladiator rod, sometimes when there are small ones, i can hardly feel them, i had a fiberglass ugly stick before, it felt great when the squid where hooked on. I guess i have to get use to this graphite feel. I saw a calamari today, it wasnt going for my jig, it was on the surface with its tentacles spread out and high, like a dance, it was not attracted to the jig at all, have you ever seen this type of behaviour before?

also i want to ask you, do you eat the small calamari, or are you using them for bait?

Gday Ben, I used to squid a lot land based, but now most of my squidding is done from the yak in fairly shallow water from 1-4m deep. I fish my jigs a lot like I do SPs - give the jig a flick or two, then let it sink for a few seconds, then raise the rod tip slowly, then let it sink. With the little Emeraldas 1.8 jigs I let them sink for a long time before I start the retrieve. Every now and again I give the reel handle a few really quick turns then stop and wait a few seconds (like the 'burn and kill' technique used by lure fishos). I find this often provokes a strike, especially when the squid are finicky or shy, and just watching the jig but not grabbing it - when they see the jig race away from them then stop dead it can turn them on big time <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I usually have the rod angled at 90 degrees to the line, so I guess I mostly jig from the side.

I also get quite a lot of squid by cheating <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> - drifting over the shallow weed beds, with a jig under a float about a metre off the bottom, while I cast/retrieve another jig, or a soft plastic for flatties etc. Some days I get all my squid on the cast/retrieved jig, and some days they're all on the float rig, sometimes it's a mix of the two. Go figure! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Bent-rod, I have seen the behaviour you mentioned when walking the shallows at night with a prawn light - I thought at the time that the squid might be trying to imitate floating weed to attract small baitfish, there was a lot of weed around at the time that looked very similar to the squid's posture.

Hi to all squid fishos, I have been watching the Botany - LaPerouse squid fishing results for a while now, I thought it was about time I joined up, to this excellent site! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

I have fished Bare Island several times this month and have had sucess with the green YoZuri squid jigs, using a slow cast and retrieve from the bridge. It also pays to have a second rig set up paternoster style when the tide is up just make sure your drag is set light and your rod secured <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> .

Keep up the good work Glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
