Oh surely that can't be right.
I was reliably told that Victoria is "The Squid State", in fact I'm pretty sure there will be a new slogan on our number plates soon saying just that ;-)

I've been to Victor Harbour once, it was a lovely looking place. I wouldn't mind spending some time there and trying a bit of fishing for Squid and other fish too.

:blink: I am going back to the Bluff at Victor inabout 2 weeks. Keep you posted on the results.
A beach 11ks from there called Waitpinga is great for salmon. Pilchards are the best bait but lures work very well to.

These two spots can be quite windy at times because they are open areas where as the Bluff has a big hill behind it to stop the southerly winds.

Both locations have jetty's. A good sized boat would be needed as the waters in these spots can be quite hazardous.
Rapid bay jetty used to be very big. It was a jetty used a while ago for large ships to dock and recieve granite and other materials. It is now not used by the ships and some parts have been removed. It was once T- shaped. It waters are very deep and used a lot by divers.
It was in danger of being closed because of vandals damaging the conveyors used for the ships and general damage to the jetty. But I do not believe it has been closed yet. That would be a shame. It is a great fishing spot.

To get back to your original question, Streaky Bay is on SA far west coast about 800 ks from Adelaide - 110 km southeast of Ceduna.
The jetty is famous for squid, among other things, my dad caught a 35lb snapper from the jetty many years ago.
I am at present in Streaky on holidays, was meant to leave today but the wind is too strong for comfort towing a caravan.
I went to the jetty last evening and caught two just on dusk which was a good result for just now as (according to locals) the tides and wind has been wrong.
I was talking to a pro whiting fisherman who catches his own squid for bait yesterday, he can regularly go into the bay by boat and catch 40 - 50 kg in a afternoon, so there are heaps about.

@BadLuck - Rapid bay has temporarily closed, awaiting a meeting between the tourism commission, SARFAC(South aussie rec fishing advisiory council) and the diving people to see what is going to happen - someone needs to take responsibility for the upkeep of this place - apparenlty $2mill is the figure - would be a great shame if it never opened again!
AS for cape jervis - 10x better than rapid bay and the bluff - our average sized squid from here is 1kg, and our biggest is 3kg! Great spot in october..............Fish from the jetty, or in a boat (can be a small boat) from just out the end of the breakwater - unweighted pillies can get you salmon in the same spot!
Heading to the bluff and waitpinga saturday night!!
This special net on a rope thing - We Call them a CRAB NET!! LOL!!
And yes they are something which is definitely required when fishing for squid in our great state - i always take a crab net or a landing net - have lost too many squid due to the line breaking.............
