Brighton pier and surrounds - VIC

Anybody had a go off Brighton or Beaumaris recently? There was a few off Brighton 2 months ago but they went missing a while ago.

I had a go off Brighton pier on Friday night, lost one squid, but it was certainly not what I would consider hot action. I caught one there about two weeks ago.

I also had a fish off Queenscliff Pier yesterday, caught one medium sized squid, and learned a lot. For anyone who is interested:

1) I'm not sure if it's normally lit up, but Queenscliff Pier was definately not lit last night, except for one light right at the start of the pier.

2) As soon as it got dark, my pilchard baits were getting stripped to the bone by hordes of big sea lice. This was annoying, because it meant I used up all my baits in about 20 minutes. I then started fishing with yo-zuris, and got one squid. Has anyone come up against sea lice before, and does anyone know how to beat them? (I have heard that dipping baits in kerosene will do the trick, but I can't imagine that a squid would touch a bait after this treatment.....) <_<

3) There was a strong current running....I should have expected this, since the Rip is just next door to the pier. Is fishing at Queenscliff better during slack water?

G'day i here a lot of reports of calamari been caught around brighton by both pier and boat anglers just wondering where exactly they get them as i am willing to give them a go from my boat any suggestion would be appriated

i read a report on fishnet that a guy got 9 near the brighton breakwater, biggest went 1.5kg apparently.

I am new to squid fishing and have got myself a couple of Yamashita 2.0 squid jigs to go with my bream fishing outfit.



I was told to go to Brighton Pier from sunset till around 8.30 and work the pier all the way up to the rock wall. I was also told that if I don't get anything by 8.30, go home. As far as technique, it's dead easy compared with the bream fishing using HB or SPs i am used to.



I went there twice and both times I got zilch, not even a touch or a follow (as far as I could see anyway). Are there squid in Brighton this time of the year? (I was told there are.) What could I be doing wrong if that's the case. I have tried all sorts of retrieves, both vigorous and slow.



Please advice.

Hi Kevin,

Brighton pier usually fires on the squid around this time.

However, this year they've been very scarce.

Best spot is from the end of the baths to second shelter. Focus there.



Also, try moving further south. Beaumaris, Mornington or MtMartha.

Keep trying your retrieve's, and swap jig's/brand's around, till you find one you catch with.

That spot, casting towards the south is usually full of float fishos fishing for garfish, is that the area you said I should focus on?

Just afraid to travel further south and still nothing happens, especially when I want to drag my partner to come squid fishing with me. Which do you think it's the best recommendation?

Yep, casting South where the gar fisho's are, but even closer to the baths. Follow the ink stains.

You'll also get the odd one casting North.



I'd say you'll need to travel further south ATM. Mornington's a good bet.



Smaller jig's at mornington. Up tp 2.5

Brighton pier I'll go 2.5 to 3.5. Flinders pier 3.0 to 4.0 and whiting.

Any brand will work. Just depends on how you work each brand.

ya... mornington is a great spot to squid :>

The first time I went there was season and you can see almost every 30 s squid was caught <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':angry:' />.

But this few years, seem not as much squid as the past.

Believe you may get few at mornington or nothing in Brighton ... don't see a lot report at brighton, but looking forward some report at brighton :>

well went up to brighton and nothing but 2 banjo sharks...

no squid at all....even though i followed the stains

I also had a spin for a couple of hours yesterday evening.

Had one small squid grab the jig in close and let go.

That was it. I was fishing a low tide however.

yeah same, i was in at low tide. brighton pier looks good for squid imo. very simular to mornington.

I've done well in past seasons from Brighton, and

you get 1-2kg modles there too. High tide is preferable.

Hello All,



I am new to this site but i love squid fishing, i have never fished down this way as i have a house at phillip island.

I am keen to go to beaumaris pier...

But where is it? Is it the pier where the yaucht club is? drove past there last night looked like it was locked up???

Any info will help. Also birghton pier, best times to get down there? lo or high tide?

even if someone would like to meet me there and we have a fish togeather?

3 Squid off beaumaris pier this morning, could see a few big ones swimming around just after daybreak didnt even look at the 5 jigs i had in the water.



Sunrise about 7:40am, High tide at 8:15. slight breeze from the north, turned into a 30km northerly around 9:15am

Soon as the tide turned, i had switched to my #3 El Cheapo Pink jig and i got one, then i got another 2 or 3 casts later, then another not long after that, the guy fishing besides me got one at the same time i got my third.



Not much size in them, i'll upload a photo later. biggest was about 25cm tube. then 23cm then 20cm.



All on the El cheapo...

El Cheapo belongs to my better half, so i just purchased a new #3 Pink Flash Dancer and a Yami #3 pink something or other.



I was told size #3 didnt work down there by the a guy fishing, i got three on one, and the other squidder switched to a #3 and got one too...
