Turkey Squidding

Hi everybody!

Good news!! At least I can tell ya that there certainly are some squid in the turkish sea.

the area where i was trying my luck was between about 10 nm west of Marmaris and 15 nm east of Fethiye.

most of the time we were trolling for bonitos and the likes. But one night (full moon) we suddenly got lots of strikes with no results. Next strike and we got a tentacle of about 30 cm in size(poor sqid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> ).

trying out a sqid jig did not bring us any strike at all <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I have to mention that we were trolling with between 2.8 and 5 kts(1.4 - 2,6 m/s) and about 1 to 5 nm off shore.

We only got strikes on our trolling line(4 sidearms with sqid lookalikes followed by a spoon at the end). I assume that they only hit the squid lookalikes as we found the mentioned tentacle on the red one of those.

So with experienced gained here comes my recommendation: by a "local" trolling line(handheld) and exchange the hooks with squid hooks. dont go faster than 2.5 kts as the rig will come out the water otherwise.(we exch. the 40 gr wheight with a 100...i wasnt the captain on our boat so I had only limited authority regarding our speed <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' /> ) However..the area is great for sqids thats for sure lots of seaweed at the coasts and very clear water. btw one of us caugth a kraken with a knife whislt snorkeling and we got a good bonito(2.7 kg), too.

So with some effort u should be easily able to top my poor results <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

This post has prompted me to ask a question:



Has anyone ever tried slowly trolling for squid? Squid like a moving bait so it would make sence to me that if we troll for them not only will we cover more area but also possibly increase the catch rate?



What are other peoples thought?

we often troll for arrow squid at night for king baits and its very succesfull some days 3 squid to a jig!

I have caught the odd calamari doing the same and have tried lead lines over the grounds we where on the other day for limited succes.

On tuesday I was driving the boat to stay on the spawn ( only a matter of a few meters and left my jig tried off and in the water).

when I went to drop it to its correct depth there was a nice squid pumping away on it , so it can be done but wether its as succesfull is doubtfull.

do you target the kingies in the RIP area? I would love to have a go at catching one this summer and would really appreciate any tips <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> , like how far down the water column should i set the baits, and is there a month when they really fire up?
