Hi everyone,
I came across a few websites that sell underwater lighting systems for recreational fishers. I believe these would be very useful for attracting squid. Not sure where they can be purchased. I think they attach to a standard 12 volt battery. The text below comes straight from the company websites.

gday glen,
i have got one of those sealed light bulbs with aligator clip that you have show. Mine came from greece where incidently my dad was told it was illegal to use them., he was told that because it is so bright it stuns the fish and they can die <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':unsure:' /> don't hold me to that one...
Anyway i have used it here for floundering off the boat and found that a 12V car battery doesn't last too long with one of these current hungry lights clipped to it! I have since gone to a gas light hanging out the front of the boat. Not onlyis the gas light brigther and i can adjust the brightness to suit it also keeps me warm during the chilly calm nights!
I've got a sealed beam light on a pole that I use for floundering (hope it's not illegal). I find that I can get about 6 hours of light from a full 12V battery....just not quite enough to last out the night! I have also seen guys on piers using weighted Dolphin torches (waterproof) on ropes to attract squid....I was sceptical, but the guy who was using them swore by it. Expensive I would imagine with batteries@>$8 each!
Also while floundering I have seen small (5cm) squid grab tiny mullet illuminated in the light - awesome to see.

i didnt get anywhere near 6hrs out of my 12V battery, i suspect it wasnt fully charged to begin with. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':angry:' />
Floundering adds a whole new dimension to fishing i think, as you said it is awesome to see the squid going after baitfish etc. the fluro green colour of garfish as they swim around is pretty cool too... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I usually go somewhere between Modialloc and Chelsea (in Port Philip Bay) but the catches I have been getting the last few years are nothing compared to 10 years ago. However, it's still worth going for the gars, flathead, and squid you can also get.
Most of the beaches on the west coast (Lorne area) are great (but far away), but the big waves make floundering here quite a different experience compared to the tranquil waters of the bay!

If i am floundering from shore, ie. wearing waders, i go to Beaumaris Bay at the end of Charman Rd. There is a carpark there and you walk down a path to the beach. From this area we have caught flathead, flounder, small rays, sand crabs and small octapus. To the right towards Table Rock the sandy bttom becomes more broken and you never know what might be lurking about <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':unsure:' />
I have heard of big butterfish being caught in the San Remo area Jazman.
Between the mornington boat ramp and the beach there is a small reef. One time when i was floundering from the boat i came across some pesky squid. This small cove may also be worth a look at.
Another spot i have been successful for large sand crabs is again Mornington but along the sandy beach at the exposed ramp, (fishermans ramp?).

I think we should wait for the warmer weather cause it'll be freezing cold at the moment, especially if you get a splash of water down the waders :blink:

Floundering around together sounds good, I made a spear at the end of last Summer and have a light, just haven't been out yet. I was planning on going at Clifton Springs which is close to where jbrules reckons is good. That whole stretch has shallow beaches with weed areas.
Don't think flounder like weed, they love big flat boring expanses of sand, but I think the presence of weed/seagrass will increase your likelihood of seeing (and maybe spearing) other fish which do like weed, like gars, whiting, squid etc.
I used to try and get gars with a dip net, and after losing lots which were just too quick I switched to a multi-pronged spear (a trident style one) and my catch rate is better with this. You always still miss a few, but not as many as with the net. It's surpising how good you can get at judging the refraction after a few outings. Also, if the gars are small and swimming right near the surface, you can stun them by smacking down hard on top of them with the spear (this is when the net comes in handy) it's quite easy to collect a few bait-sized gars this way.
