Underwater lighting for recreational squid fishing

Hi guys, i came across this thread whilst searching for squid lights/submersible lights/flounder lightsetc



I see a lot of you are local people to my area, so it has made for some good reading. (ok, now i understand, Vic sub-forum)

I notice i lot of lights are used on American Sites, with preference to Green and Red (pink) spectrums.

There has also been many advances in LED lighting, which will not drain your battery like more conventional lighting will.



So after all these years, does anyone have any results to share???



I have seen people make rigs out of PVC tube that hold the light under water off a boat, even multiple lights out the back of a boat.

I like that Combo Green Flouro and penetrating white light to get down the water tables....

i have over the years, fished off many gamefishing boats with underwater lights

the lights definately attract fish.

not being able to justify the cost, i decided to make my own

these are proto types using 9 'super bright' leds

the light pool extends 10m

the leds draw .02 amp each (which works out to 25 days continuous running off my battery)

all you need is a basic understanding of electronics and your set

these cost less than $20 ea to put together.

these 'ultra bright' low power leds provide very good illumination for the power that they use

if you are looking for an "underwater spotlight" i would concider using

CREE High Power XLamp® XP-G LED, these new leds will pump out heaps of light

but the trade off is that they will use about 3A, which is not that much less than a halogen bulb

these will be the next series of leds that i will play around with

you would need to turn it on

the ones i used 32000mcd 15 deg, it's like looking at a welding flash

leaves spots on your retinas for 10min

yeah actually that happened to me after looking at my cheapy LED torch head on! silly me! I won't do that again in a hurry.

went jew fishing the other night

didn't do any good on jew, however my lights attracted a school

of yakkas and kept them there for about 5 hours.

it's nice to know when you want a fresh bait, all you need to do is just jig one up



the lights work well however i believe that they need be a little bit brighter

(i'll just add in more leds)

let you know the results

I've got a sealed beam light on a pole that I use for floundering (hope it's not illegal). I find that I can get about 6 hours of light from a full 12V battery....just not quite enough to last out the night! I have also seen guys on piers using weighted Dolphin torches (waterproof) on ropes to attract squid....I was sceptical, but the guy who was using them swore by it. Expensive I would imagine with batteries@>$8 each!

Also while floundering I have seen small (5cm) squid grab tiny mullet illuminated in the light - awesome to see
