Problems with squids!
#1
Hi everybody!

My name is Vinko, and I live in Croatia.

I am pretty tight with english but I would try to do my best.

Today I was in squid fishing first time, and I haven't catch any.

I am not sure what have I did wrong! Some guys near me caught 2 squids.

I was using 2 types of jigs, number 3.0(10cm) with blue and orange colours.

Water deep in fishing area is about 6 meters, and is known as a good fishing position.

3 hours I've been throwing the jigs in all directions, but without sucess.

This is my technik:

I throw the jig,and then I give her 15 seconds to sink, and then I pull her back with short jerks!

The time of fishing was 4pm-7pm.

Please help because next time I really want to cath the squid.

Thanks,and stay the best!

Hi Vinko,

Welcome to the forums.

It sounds like your technique is OK. When you make the "short jerks" try to vary this. For example, pause for a couple of seconds in between jerks. Or do strong jerks and soft ones. Also vary your line retrieve speed. Try fast and slow. Generally slow is better for me.

You might also like to try suspending a squid jig under a float. Set it so that the jig will be a metre or two above the sea floor. This often works quite well for me. You do not need to jerk the jig if using a float. If a squid grabs the jig, then the float should be pulled under the surface and you will know you have caught a squid!

What technique is used by the other people who caught the squid? If I were you I would copy what they do! Maybe you can stand close to them so you can see how they make their fishing rigs.

All the best,

Thanks Glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I would try to copy them, but you know how are people react on that....

'' Kid take some other place,or I'll.... Big Grin ''

By the way how does squid takes the jig. I've seen your movie which is excellent, but do you feel the squid when she attacks, like a fish? Some people tells me that you feel only a bigger weight and that's it.

Thanks

Hi Vinko,

You will feel extra weight yes this is true. Also, squid try to pull away in bursts. So you will feel this surging movement.

Best of luck, <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Oh, I forget something. I was reading Your text and I saw Your pictures. The squid in Croatia is totaly different. Colour and build and system for fishing and time of fishing. The best time in Croatia is winter. In this period squid comes from deep see in few metar area to make the eggs ( I don't know the word), don't smile. The best colour for us is green and orange. The best time is night with full moon. We also trolling squid and this is most sucesfull teh. Speed is 1-2 knots, 25 m from boat in 2-5m deep. We use Rapala jiggs( the bigger one). The best colour is orange. This jigg have some action left-right. Last year I cauth 75kg in one night (full moon, calm see). This year is really bad for that and I fishing only in sunny day on 30-50m deep. That gives result. Down I have one big sviel jigg ( Yo-zuri 150g) Up to that I have one green jig approx. 80cm from sviel jig on 15cm long terminal (I hope You understand). Up that on 80cm I have the another jigg. The same size, orange colour, also on 15cm terminal. The terminal can move about 10cm up-down. Before few days I cauth in ones 3 squid. Evrey squid is about 1kg. Big suprise for me! deep was 32m. This day I cauth the another few squid. Every was big. Deep 32-39m. The deepest see were I cauth the squid it was 76m. The small squid looks like big one when you trolling from this deept.

On board I have life-bait pool and I can release squid after two days in pool. If I have not a pool squid live about 1h in one liter of watter. In winter longer, in summer kurtzer(D). It depence of watter surf temperature.

Uf. That is incredible if You undersand anything. This is hard.

Hi Marin !

Looks like bad winter this season ha?

I am squiding from coast with lots of other fishermans in Strozanac near Split.

Terrible season. No big squids. Every time I get small ones.

Maybe next month would be better.

Hi Vinko

I am going to Pula and then sailing for 2 weeks on 24th June. What colour squid jigs do you recommend. Also what other fishing other than trolling? Can you fish the bottom with success? Regards

Peter
