The only way I know is to wait for the slow bite on the float when using prawn, reel in very slowly, then send the jig down when they let go on the surface. Otherwise I would imagine if you are patient with the jig, repeated casting would get them. The one on monday was on a medium tide, during the day, from bay 8 on the Long (East) arm. Good luck!!

We have started catching medium tubes right in tight to the beach. Large tubes out on rocks, but seen crossing the bar at the mouth of the river during the day. We have found the squid seem to follow the bass shoals around, whether same diet or predating on bass. A number of smaller bass have had the telltale lovebites on the back of the neck. There are some good showings off Bognor. They do appear to be early this year, after breeding they don't really appear until mid September and run through to end of November.Egg laying this year was a month before the cuttles, and lasted for about a month. So there should be plenty for next year!!!

Hi all just joint today and the forum looks good, i am a commercial fisherman from Cornwall..Uk,....we will start Squid jigging here in approx 2-3 weeks time and our fishery here will last approx 3-4 weeks , that said last year it lasted 2 weeks approx as Mackeral moved in around the Coast and the boats ourself inclueded sailed around the other side, we hand jig and catch approx 1 box (20 Kilo) a time yet i have had the odd trip where you can catch 1-2 in 3hrs and thats yer lot it varies so much.



I will post here when we have them and their amounts if you like or for anyone thats interested.

have you ever considered using an automated jigging machine? it might help you to catch more squid! is there a limit on how many squid you are allowed to catch? i am guessing you can keep a lot more than 20kg.



are you using lights on your boat to attract the squid/mackeral? i wasn't clear on whether you catch the mackeral and squid at the same time.

hi, i fish for squid out of weymouth and it has only just taken off , i caught 23 last night only a few hundred yards out of weymouth harbour using the japanese type jigs , cuttles are in abundance and they were all caught in daylight, each squid was at least 14 inches long , happy hunting

What do you mean by japanese style jigs? Do you mean the non-prawn style with an umbrella hook? Or traditional with an Asian-style hook (spider hook)? Thanks for any help you can provide. I am a squid jig manufacturer and I am trying to gain an understanding of the local definitions of squid jigs. For example, in my region, we have no prawn-style squid jigs. So, we call the jigs with the umbrella hook a "traditional squid jig" and the traditional (upright) jigs made with the Asian-style hook (spider hook) a Japanese or Asian jig.

yes i meant the prawn style jig with the umbrella type hooks although when the squid are under the boat they seem to take anything but the prawn type are definetely the best in our area

hi glen , yes i go a lot from now onwards till possibly xmas depending on weather etc , the squiding in weymouth causes a big buzz in the town when it takes off and all the charter boats stop off in the area on return from their angling trips to enjoy the squiding before entering harbour, it would be nothing to see a dozen boats just out of the harbour on a nice evening just before dark. cheers sixsquid

Hi Glen yeah we started squidding and are looking at maybe setting up lights to improove our catch rate, our season here lasts approx 3-4 weeks and thats your lot, i have looked at automated jiggers but at a starting price of approx £1500 GBP , my wife would kill me and land me if i bought 2 of these <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':unsure:' /> , yeah we use lines with 40 hooks for mackeral and with the 2 lines we work thats 80 hooks working the water mannually and we catch approx 300-400kilo of mackera; per trip of 3-4hrs , our squid catchs are not huge approx 20-50kilo on a very good day and they tend to show here November time inshore not sure about offshore as we do all our work within the 5-6mile limit.



There are not restrictions at present on the amount of squid we can turn in with on each day , but the Uk runs a quota system and when the quota is up we are told and we cannot land another single fish of that type, hope this helps speak soon sheep <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thumbsup2:' />

Hi Glen and everyone. Any of you UK squid fishers that can get down to Brighton Marina and get your jigs out. There were a total of 12 caught to four anglers (I had three for 7lb!) when I had to leave. I think they will be there until the next big blow, as that is what happened last year. Not sure if it is ethical in squid fishing circles, but we had them by float fishing the jigs. Came to this conclusion as they were quite happy to take the floatfished prawn last year, and it seems to work!

Here's another one. The marina is stiff with them at the moment, possibly to the detriment of other fish. Dont think I would want to be a pouting down there at the moment!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Biggest problem we have is a complete drought of jigs in the shops in Sussex!

Way to go fishyrob at Brighton!Was told by a friend that there are also squid showing in some of the gullies around beachy head,don't know if they are in any real numbers though.So think if i get chance over the weekend i might try my luck round there.It's a hell of a hike though and if your not careful you can get cut off by the tide though.How deep do you usually set the jig under a float?Or do you just vary it according to conditions?
