National Recreational & Indigenous Fishing Survey
#1
Hi everyone,

I recently had a look through the National Recreational & Indigenous Fishing Survey 2003. It has some useful information in relation to squid and cuttlefish catches by recreational fishers. I have extracted the relevant parts below. The full report can be located at www.affa.gov.au/recfishsurvey

Squid/cuttlefish

Nationally, recreational fishers harvested about 1.7 million squid, the majority (61%) of which were taken in South Australia (primarily southern calamary Sepioteuthis australis). Significant catches were also taken in Western Australia (13%), Victoria (12%) and New South Wales (9%) while moderate harvest levels were taken in Queensland (4%) and Tasmania (3%).

Line fishing (mainly lures or jigs) was by far the main capture method (98% of numbers), with nets and spears accounting for most of the balance. Almost two thirds of the harvest was taken whilst boat fishing. Squid/cuttlefish were primarily caught in coastal waters (77%) and to a lesser extent in estuaries (16%) and offshore waters (7%).

This is quite interesting. I had no idea those Sth Aussies catch so many squid compared to Victorians. Does anyone know whether this is because there are more squid in SA, or more squid fishers? Maybe someone from SA could comment on this (Mr Willy?)

Cheers

Gday Jazman

I dont exactly know why but a lot of anglers here in South Australia love to catch squid for there eating capabilities and becuase it also make good bait for other species

As every part of a squid is basicly used for purpose and is not actually wasted

the tenticles of squid can be used for kg whiting the head of the squid can be used for snapper and crab bait and few other species

mind you south australia does have bag limits per angler of squid i cant think of hand as i havent been squid fishing for over a year or so now

anyway cheers

The bag limits are listed here:

I hope this info is still accurate. I put it together some time ago.

Cheers ozdevil, I didn't know you guys in SA were so keen on squid......good to hear. I agree, compared to other fish, there is virtually no wastage from squid. Also, love the little guy in the boat at the bottom of your post...awesome!
