Your best bet is probably to approach your local tackle store to see if they can give you any tips on the auckland area. Let us know if you find out any more info.
Despite how some of the fishery books says squid fishing is most active during summer time, I went squid fishing in the last two months and had no catch at all.
Local folks said squid fishing is better during cooler months, why???
The squid we catch here in Auckland, New Zealand are BOARD SQUID.
I used 25lbs line the other day but still lost a expansive squid jig.I could see that It was pulled into the weeds.
It seems a heavy line does not affect the fishing reults, and I got 8 squids in 2 hours time. All jigs were baited and suspended under a float with about 1/2 m trace. This method works fine.
These days there are lots of squids around the shore, but the weather is not good so can not fish every day/night. Peter
I used to fish squids at the Mairangi Bay jetty, Auckland,NZ. Sometime there were 20 people fishing there, The squids seems to have no place to survive. The catch was poor.
These days I fish around the coast line at the North Shore and have very good results. Yesterday I got 5 squids. It was raining.
Fish anywhere the water is calm and the sea is weedy.

Got 7 yesterday in a couple of hours at Mairangi, 4 quite big. I did 10 a few days ago and it was my first time! I left as it was getting better.
A few weeks back I catch two while jigging for bait fish from a boat, and since I've been looking for them. A friend saw the ink stains in the jetty, and since I'm totally hook. I've buy a couple of jigs, but is the ones I've build and the way I fish them that are outperforming locals. Yesterday, on the same spot a lady manage one while another guy got nothing.
Instead of a secret spot, I have a personal technique, and so far is performing well... even on this overfished area. I'll start to look for better spots: there is so many people fishing there that I find two nice jigs while i was fishing <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />
Else than eating, this squid is an awesome bait for snapper fishing and it already get us a 10 pounder over the weekend.

I actually wanted to try how abundant are squid on our area: the idea was to use a bike to better explore the coast line. I stop by the fist lamp post close to the shore and I didn't need to move... one after the other they found the jig irresistible. 1h30 and my container was full.
I was using a simple Kiwell squid jig... nothing fancy. A long and light rood to give the lure a good and slow mid water animation. Most of the fishing was done just before my eyes and could see all the entertaining action.
The squid where attacking the lure just behind the head, and only after a nice scrap they'll release and get properly hook. I'll need to add some barbs on the area to hold them better.
When the fishing gets harder I use a train of 3 "squid flies" behind a small baited rig. I fish this the same way I would fish trout with a dead fish (in france) and I cover a lot of ground combing the coast line. I'll always do well with this.
Greg... what you reckon would be the best size wire to build small squid hooks. The SS I got is too thin and I have hard time to do them so they hold properly. The next one I try was to thick!!! I can do them quite fast: I'll post a tutorial once I get the wire right...
Tuesday this week I went to another spot in the Shore and I got 14 squids and lost another 5 in 2 hours time. The tide was running out.
Than I went on wednesday, but the Northly wind stopped me from fishing. So got nothing.
I found the squid-lure which I bought from the Warehouse fish better than the other, and they are cheap too. $10 for 3 pieces of different sizes and colours.
Usually I fished with two rods. I found the soft tip rod hold the squids better, perhaps it keeps the consistent pressure on the squid.
All squid-lure were baited with pilchard. I had seen people using squid as bait but I had never tried this method.
I bait the rig only if conditions are hard, or if we are two fishing and i want to make sure I don't miss the second one. I tend to use mackerel because I have plenty of them on my freezer.
Most of the time, If I want a feed I just drop by the shore with the rod a bag and two lures... no need for more.
The other case is when I need squid bait for a big fishing day... I take everything and more to secure the catch.
I only use one rod, my style is pretty active moving along the shore looking for the squids. No float, no seat and minimum of gear. If I want to use two roads I bring someone along to fish with me.
I only miss them when using small hooks on small lures. I need to add some barbs on the back to make them more effective. But I'll still catch them by another pass close by if I need to. My rood is fairly stiff but about 3.8m (but feather light, is a trout ultra light set up) so I have plenty of length to play the squid softly. The length enable me to play the lure above the weed and along the shore.
I've discover that they are chewing though the cloth of my prawns. I was thinking that it was the banging against he rocks, but the last spot was deep, and the rips are along the area where they have been taking the lure. They are so aggressive that they try to take the lure apart :blink:
I need to have a better look at the Warehouse, I've never seen those!!!!

Sorry Pete, I haven't been close to the water lately.
I don't normally plan the trips for squid... If my GF looks away for an hour or so, I'll grab the rood and run to the shore.
But I'll go to get bait for a big day out sometime next week. I'll post when and where. Or if you have a good spot we can arrange for a fishing session.

Can you guys catch squid at the Mairangi Bay jetty? Are you referring to the Murrays Bay jetty? I used to fish for pipers there but never seen squid yet. Fish both near the rocks or at the end of the jetty. But actalluy any where is fine,pls read my articles.
Summer seems not a good time to squid-fishing.,try september to december.
