Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season
Quote:Newest, hottest Yozuri squid jigs! Just became available in the US!

Get them locally at Sam's Bait and Tackle 936 Aquidneck Ave Middletown RI!
Hi Sam, how about some photos?? I stopped by Sam's last spring looking for Naorys, but they didn't have any. I'd like to see what these new Yozuris look like, I find the Naorys have outfished all other Yozuris available, perhaps these new ones I haven't seen will be able to compete.
I went out for some jigging just before sunset until about 5:15. Cold wind and a lot of chop out at GI. No squid caught by me or the half dozen other people out there.
Thanks for the update BillG.

Here now at GI. Caught one and others are catching but I'm not 😓

What were the sizes? Also, were you on the causeway or down on the sea wall? Hopefully, I can get back out again this week.
Sizes ranged from 3" (lol) to like 8 the biggest. Went back out and caught 60 last night. I'm going back tonight.

Started at the corner and caught a few and caught the rest mid bridge. You'll see the ink

Update** caught 70 Wednesday night without any lights. By the second trash bin between midnight and 4am
Caught 63 before dark at JT from my kayak. I was in the first cove next to the dem house. By the way someone had a light going after dark over there. That cove was loaded with squid. Tried for black fish with no luck the squid saved my trip

I don't know how many here have seen these cool jig hook covers. They are available from Tomo's Tackle. They snap over your jig hooks and you can now easily keep a few in your pockets without them snagging eveywhere. There are two types, one without a little hook to attach it to your rod or those with the little hook. The one I picture here has the hook to attach it to your rod's hook keeper or guide. They work wicked good!!

Hit JT again Thursday afternoon and it was lock and load caught 75 before the rain started. I have one that was 16 inches long most in the 8 to 10 range. Most of the big ones are holding bottom

Quote:Somebody just stole my whole box of squid jigs.

I hope your family go to the hell forever and your kid gonna be go to the hell too.

This is fuuucking annoying.

I bet you are fuuuucking south East Asian.
Oh, I forgot to say something.

I usually share my light with other but I'm not gonna do that anymore because some azzhole piss me off.
Hi All -

I haven't been on this forum in a while, but wanted to know if squid are still hitting (today is Monday, December 1st, 2014) ... or if they have now moved out for the winter. If they are still around, can you also advise where the hottest spots would be (GI? JT?), and how much longer the season generally lasts?

People were catching a week and a half ago. Last year, people were going out in December and catching. I would guess this full moon will be the last push of squid into the area, so you can catch them coming in and leaving. If you go to GI, it won't be like catching them in late May/Early June. It will probably be more like early May or even late April. You may catch few or none, which is fine if you spend a nice night fishing, but not so fine if you spend a 20 degree, howling wind night freezing your nether region off. After this last possible push, you may find squid if you go look for them in a boat, but it would hardly be worth the time to hope they happen past you standing, exposed to the North wind, on the GI causeway.
Don't know if anyone is still squidding. I read a fishing report that said Atlantic Herring were showing up on South County beaches. For anyone still getting out, have you seen any herring at GI or JT or anywhere else? I wouldn't mind some herring but with really cold temps. intermixed with high winds and rain, I haven't gotten out lately.
Hi Bill, thanks for the info on the squid. I'm from CT and haven't been to RI in a while. I plan on coming back up today. I can't provide much information on the herring, as I never fish for them but will send an update on squid if I catch any.
Hi Bill, I forgot to add this to my last posting ... if I do see any herring, is there a preferred method (lure? bait?) to use when fishing for them? Thanks again!
