Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season
When the squid get there, lol.   You never know when they will

show up and how many.  Wait for when harbor freight puts them on

sale  =  $39.00

Thanks JANZ! I saw that Harbor Freight recently had one on sale for $29.99 during their "Parking Lot Sale" over the weekend ... will wait for the next sale to come around ... wonder if it's decent quality though ...
Went fishing for bass/blues last night at Fort Adams. A group of guys were catching squid. They probably pulled up almost a dozen in a short timespan. Then some schoolies started jumping and their bite died out.
The squid are around all summer but they are scattered around the bay. You will still find schools around.

Was told the squid are back around the pt judith docks again.

Went out fluking in a boat on Sunday. One of my nephews, who had only ever caught a couple sunfish in freshwater managed to hook a squid on a fluke rig in 70+ feet of water North of the Newport Bridge. Of course, I left my squid jig tackle box at home because there was no chance we were going to find squid during the day in July drifiting deep water for fluke. Apparently, I was wrong. Fall run is only a few months away though, right?

Squids are still out there and I caught more than 30 of them last Saturday night but I was only one who constantly catch them.

There was whole bunch of other peoples doing squidding.

In the worst of times, you seem to be the only one catching. I need to get much better at it so I can justify getting a chest freezer. That logic works, right? Smile

When does the fall run typically begin?  Is it as predictable as the spring run (keep an eye on water temperature until it reaches a certain warmth)?

It's really more about the moon than the water temps in the Fall. Unlike Spring, the water is already warm "enough." The squid are here in small schools throughout the Summer and into early Fall. If you look at last year's forum, you'll see people were squidding into Nov. My theory is that the big factor that contributes to a squid "run" is that the predators don't bust up the bigger schools into a bunch of smaller skittish ones. So, since a lot of the Summer predators move out in the late Sept., early Oct. timeframe, the squid can make bigger breeding schools in the Oct./Nov. full moons. So, depending on moon phase, the Sept., Oct., and Nov. full moons may bring big runs into the Bay. So the two weeks surrounding the new moon between those full moons would be good times to go squidding. However, moon and tide and your available time to go squidding likely wont line up, so just get out when you can, hopefully not when there is a huge, bright moon overhead.
Can Anybody tell me when and where squid fishing in the FALL (Oct -Nov) ? RI or Ma ?

Catching great in New London.

Catch from boat under the Newport bridge on Saturday night.  Small squid, slow night.  But I was glad I caught squids in the fall.  I was the only boat out there.
