thanks jaz, i had a look in one of my books and the flathead was definately a southern blue spotted. thanks for the tips around parky i will have to try it one time. also, i friend told me there is a close inshore reef about 50m to the right of mordy pier? has any1 heard of this? i mite try and check it out some time soon.
oh and jaz, on the topic of kingies. in the holidays i was snorkelling around beauy, off the beach on dalgetty road, in about 3m metres of water, and i saw i kingy! it scared the hell out of me as i was just swimming along and it looked like it swimming straight for me. it then saw me and bolted back it came from, i had the camera in my hands but it is just a crappy disposable one and i hadn't "loaded" it so i couldn't get any pics of it, but i am certain it was a kingy! it was really quick.
is this rare to get them so close in? oh yeah, there it is a marine park there so you cant go spearfishing... i also saw 2 good sized flounder and loooooots of pinkies, some too small but others decent.

That pic is not great, but it weighed close to 2kg.

thx for the tip, yeah with holding ur breath it varies greatly... im 14 and in my pool i can hold my breath for over a minute but while spearfishing its closer to 30seconds.
Yeah, i practice in the car and get over a minute, but down in the water it is alot less. i think its becasue i use so much energy on my descent down,. i need to replace my short fins with a longer pair.
i have thought about berley many times before, and i was going to try it but i just cant be bothered lately.
im also quite paranoid about sharks etc. also, went down to a new spot last night and found a reef!!! YAY!!! it was swarming with snapper!!! i also saw a big school of bream (about 5 times they same past and i missed them), lots of gars, a school of decent whiting, 6 rays, a few leather jackets and heaps of snapper. it was a bit of a pain as we only had a sling between 3 of us and we didnt have a float. it took us about 2 and a half hours in the water to find the reef but it was worth it. we only got 1 snapper between three of us which weighed close to 1.5kgs but my mate was stoked. we could have gotten tons more if we had guns or a float but we didnt have either so and the fish didnt fit in the fish bag. it doesnt look that good in the photo because it was taken this morning and the fish had been in the freezer all night but it was tons better in the water and on the beach.
Thats an awesome catch pj, i went out to mordi on saturday morning (today) before the rain came. I had a laugh as i heard the guys on the pier talkin about all the flathead swimming benath them, when i dived in they were bitterly dissiapointed that they were just looking at puffas! Anyway.. at the closest reef to the pier i saw the biggest leather jacket i have seen in my life, this thing was huge. TOday i looked at it next week i will catch it. No site of snapper just bream, puffas and leathers. Do u mind me asking what beach your spot was at?
Brighton eh? the last time i went to brighton was for a fish with a rod. caught 3 big salmon, our group caught 32 all together. that was with a fish la salle trip you might have heard about. st bedes guys and st james and other schools. Im gonna go back to mordi on friday afternoon after school have another look and take a bit more time. Im keen to get a leather.
went back to the secret spot today... came back fishless. the water was shocking! you could see the bottom in 2m of water. apart from garfish and a few rays i saw nothing, or rather couldn't see anything. i am very disapointed as summer is over and thats probably the last chance to go in the warm weather <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
oh well the weather will soon get cold and the snapper will leave the bay until summer starts again. i suggest you guys go flounderin 2nite if you can as the bay was like a giant swimming pool! so flat and so calm!

Paul, congratz on ur LJ. im pretty sure winter is the best time for whiting and also the bream dont leave the bay. im not sure if any fish come into the bay during winter but many species do stay in the bay.
went to a new spot on saturday, near the beumaris yacht sqaudron. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> a Great spot! the water was clean, there was plenty of reed and structure but there were no decent fish! I was out there with two mates for about 3 hours and i only saw 2 spearable bream and a couple of garfish. i did however see lots of smaller fish, leather jacket, etc. and i also saw at least 100 small squid! there were about 5 groups of maybe 20 squid. They are amazing to watch in the water! when a group of small squid swam past a school of baitfish, their tentacles would shoot out and grab one of the litle fish and pull it towards themselves. These squid were about 5-10cm long and they were southern calamari im Fairly sure. i did see one bigger one about 30cm but left it be. we went home fishless yet again, but we had a good time anyways. Oh and would anyone be able to tell me what the fish are that are around these areas that are stripey, im not sure what they are i thought they may be juvenile luderick as they are built like luderick, but their stripes are much thicker and darker. what are they and can i spear them?
Sounds like a nice dive. I'm certain the stripey fish you saw are zebra fish - a close relative of luderick, they also eat weed, and I reckon they taste like it too. Some people really like them to eat, I leave them alone.
Hey guys, went out at mordi again yesteday (Sunday). Does anyone notice that no matter how many times you dive in the same spot you dive will always be really different. Started off just seeing baby bigfish (little fish big enought to tell what they are) lots of little leathers, bream and those circle striped fish (what are they?). LAt 20 minutes of dive i found a 1kg dusky morlong (butterfish). speared it and brought it home. I want expecting to see anything that big. i will post a photo soon.
One mroe question are there any legal requireemnts or liscencing needed for spear guns?
