More floundering

Here is a big flathead I speared while floundering in Port Phillip Bay a few weeks ago.

No seriously, it was off Chelsea, incoming tide, still and moonless night.

I have seen at least 3 that big in the past month, and dozens smaller.

I knew the big fish were there, but (as those of you who have done a bit of floundering will know) flathead usually don't hang around, I reckon I get a CHANCE of spearing about 1 in 10 that I see, the rest take off before you can get close to them.

So I decided that I would put in the time, until I got a big one. And eventually I did, but this was after at least a dozen trips, in the freezing cold, and after seeing heaps of fish that I couldn't get (but it was worth it!).

MORAL of the story is persistence pays!

Nah, great fish, mate - maybe try luring for them - if you spot one cast the lure around - might get some takers.........

i wonder if you could spin for them in the dark? do you think they would come for it? maybe a big soft plastic would do the trick?

Thought about this already, have spent 2 nights flicking big soft plastics around the shallows, without even a touch!

I'm thinking maybe bait fishing is the go......but despite all the missed fish, I think I still prefer floundering for the big crocs...

Glen - i just thought with the spotty, you could see them, then flick the lure straight past them - maybe bait might be the way to go - perhaps strips of pillies or something.......

Heh, no probs. I love flatties and release most that I catch. I have had situations where I release a perfectly pan sized flattie and people around me look at me with a "WTF?" look lol. They are my pets and release then whenever I catch one. I used to spear them but stopped <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> They are just too cool

Did anyone take advantage of the awesome conditions (but COLD) over the weekend and go floundering?



I had to get up early sunday morning to go down to woolami for surf fishing or else saturday night would've had me wading the shallows with my light and spear <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Thought very hard about it, but it was friggin cold, plus there was a big full moon (not so good for floundering).

I'll be back out in a week or so when the moon is less.

i'm going to the island on the long weekend

fished at the last car park where the woolami surf lifesaving club is. At low tide you could see a deep gutter about 5m from where the waves were breaking and the fish were lurking in there. Amongst 7 anglers i would say 40 fish were caught majority 500gms but a few 1kg fish thrown in as well. Baits used were squid/pipi/bluebait.

Nice work AK, I haven't opened my surf fishing account yet this winter, but 2 mates caught about 15 salmon at Venus Bay last weekend. All 500g or smaller.

Do you use those surf poppers? I find that I get ALL my biggest salmon on them. I fish them on the top of a 2 hook paternoster rig, with whitebait on the bottom.

Heading down to my surf beach (salt creek) for my first shot at winter salmon on July 9.

As for the weekend - tried on the Murray at Wellington and got our first legal callop for 4 months - only 41cm, but its well over legal!!
