Fishing for shy squid

Never give up they say, I started this email about 2 weeks ago and have been trying ever since and today caught a monster, even let him go as I was more impressed in just catching the bloody thing.



The only thing I did different to the other 10 or so goes, was move about 30 mtrs to the right.



Thanks for the tips on the jigs.

Good work Gav you really do need to experiment and move around. Keep flogging a spot doesnt make sense when you can move.



You are also the first person Ive heard that has released a good sized squid. Well done

Many times when I have been fishing for squid they come right up to the jig but they will just not attack/grab it. I think they might even very briefly touch it, feel the spikes on the end of it and then leave it alone, hard to say. What can you do in these situations to catch them?

maybe try a baited 'skewer' jig so the squid can feel its actually a fish?

I change the rate at which i retrieve the jig, if that doesnt work, i start changing the colour of the jig. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />



I have had squid follow a blue jig but not take it, i quickly switched to a green jig and the squid that was still hanging around took it no questions asked! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' />

why not trying using smaller jigs,say a no. 1 or 1.5.give it a go

Thats the one,you were probably there with me one night when I was squiding for 3 hours without a touch and you or someone comes down and gets 3 in 5 minutes.

whenever i go squiding with friends and i find that the squid jigs and baits don't work i use a bit of a basic setup. A 2 metre long thin piece of bamboo with an aborigional fishing barb on the end(an arrow shape where the two outer parts are attached to the base with a sliding hoop) when they're in a group we all throw our(spears) together, we only usually get one shot because they never come back after we hook a squid.

Try this:

"On clear calm sunny days there are occasions when you will be fishing for squid and the water is very clear, this can at times be a very frustrating situation. The schools of squid can be easily seen, yet you will often struggle to catch them. In my opinion this is due to the fact that all prey is cautious and all predators precautious in their approach to ambush due to their venerability in such clear conditions. In such situations I use the predatory instinct in the squids biology to aid in their demise. I cast my jig fifty meters and let it sink, if I don't catch a squid on the jig's decent I retrieve the jig with haste for ten-meter bursts, then let it sink again, this movement imitates an injured and scared baitfish and the squid generally charge in and attack the jig instinctively. This technique is quite effective and will work more often than not when the squid are as I call them "Lookers". "

If squid are timid I use the following trick. Let the jig settle to near the bottom,retrieve it to the top of the water and then flip it about on the surface ,imitating a prawn trying to escape.Quite often the response will be immediate and the jig will be attacked

yeah i have found they do that to me when a hole school of them are around dont really know why but, they seem to be shy sometimes???

would anyone like to share any more techniques



i have tried the techniques listed here and i still cant tempt the squid



i found a good spot which has quite a few squid.

i go down there after sunset and ussually catch 2 or 3. then after this the squid stop biting completely, even though i can still see them swimming around.



is that all i should expect each trip?

Are they inking when you hook up? If there is a current, try fishing them from the down stream side. If you try and fish them from the middle of the school they wise up quickly.



Other tricks are to "stay" the jig, then try dropping it suddenly or "dancing" it on the spot.

they start inking immediately after theyre hooked.

im fishing inside a marina were there is little current.



how can i try and minimise the inking?

or will they become untimid after a while and start hitting the jigs again?

If there's no current then I guess you just have to try and fish from the outside of the school or lure them into the shore or away from the school before hooking up.

If squid become "shy after you have caught a few and there are still a good number around give the area a rest for 10 minutes or so and then try again.If you still get no response try a different size /coloured jig.
