Squid fishing in SA
#1
Hey guys!!

Doesnt seem to be too many squid fishing reports from good ol SA in here, so it looks like ill have to try and fix that a bit.........

I havent actually been squid fishing for ages - recently bought myself a 4wd so ive spent most of my fishing time on the beaches chasing salmon and mulloway.....with very little success i might add....... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

I usually fish for squid on the Fluerieu Penisula - around Cape Jervis, Rapid Bay, Second Valley and sometimes the Bluff.........

This summer has been very average - usually we will catch around 10-15 squid on a good day, and most of the time these will be in the 1-1.5kg range especially from Cape Jervis......

My only trip of late was at cape jervis and rapid bay and yielded 6 calmari squid and one torpedo squid (or arrow squid), caught by my mate who was squidding for the first time - it was also the first torpedo i had ever seen.......

Anyway, ill try and get some more squidding done, and report back to you guys!!

Cheers!

Nathan

Paul, mate, if your going to switch to using the baited jigs, then i would suggest the bluff and cape jervis - get more at second valley this way, and at Rapid Bay too - i use them all the time, and only use the prawn ones for followers......

The bluff is quiet at the moment, but ive been hearing positive reports from Cape Jervis - get to the end and cast out towards the end of the breakwater

Dont forget to report back - GOOD LUCK!!

Will be very interested to see if you get any squid, as i am heading down that way on Good Friday, mainly in search of bait for a trip down to Salt Creek a couple of weekends after, and there is nothing like some fresh squid heads to tempt the mulloway.......

If your going to try cape jervis, get there early, as the ferry leaves at around 9am i think and this generally sitrs the water, and the squid stop biting for an hour or so.........

When we got there, we usually fish there till the ferry leaves (starting from about 6am) and then head to Rapid Bay or Second Valley.........

Another spot to try is the breakwater at Wirrina, but make sure you hold your rod and keep winding in the slack line or it will get tangled around the rocks.....

For interests sake, my biggest squid from cape jervis is 3kg+ taken on a morning when we got 12, with not one under 1kg, so they are a good size there - but take a landing net - we use a dab net, and when we hook a squid, i climb down the end of the jetty, onto the bottom sleeper and net the squid, as they never get hooked on the barbs on the baited jigs!!

Good Luck!!

well well its been an interesting week of squidding for me....... been 3 or 4 times in the past week and a half to second valley, first time got one monster squid and that was it....... next time got 4 and the magnet fell out of my yo zuri that had only caught 3 SQUID!!!!!!!!1 also that day i lost a new style i was trying out, a real catfish skon squid jig, a really dark leather looking colour jig that caught all 4 squid on this day in the first 2 hours before losing it. i again today lost another catfish skin jig today that i only brought today <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> that caught me one squid and i caught another three with an orange yo zure i purchased yesterday... is there any warranty on my $20 yo zuri that i only used THREE TIMES??????????? by the way the squid was excellent..... cant wait for my glow in the darkies to arrive.......... laterz all <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/as.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' />

hey glen sorry about the delayed reply my bday was on the 21st and ive had a couple of other bdays to go t so been a busy boy and no time for squidding though i might head out this arvo, i got those glow in the darkies to try yet..... any way about those cat fish skin, the whole box is in japanese and the only english i can see is the company name which i think is marukyo. they have been VERY successfull for me EXCEPT the fact that i have lost both that i have bought the first time i went squidding with them, because of snags( i dont thinks the eyes are the strongest on them......) i purchased them from a fishing store in S.A that Nathan might know, its lets go fishing and its on gulf view road. it cost me $8.95. im having trouble finding a website so i can buy another one and take a photo of it and post it on here if u like...... ive only got the empty box at the moment, but its all in chinese or japanese or something, the Marukyo logo has a swordfish making up the top part of the letter "Y". just for reference sake in case u spot it on the confusing world of foreign language websites....... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' /> have fun all

that one is already listed in my squid jig manufacturer list in the fishing tackle forum.

if you want to actually buy the jig over the internet then you may want to learn some japanese. there is a few japanese online stores mentioned in the fishing tackle forum and they will probably have what you are looking for.

best of luck, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' />

Paulus - there is some much better squidding to be had around SA, than down around the victor harbour area.....

If you wanna try some more places down there - the places i have caught squid - Cape Jervis, the rocks at Fisheries Beach, the rocks at Morgans Beach, Second Valley (jetty+rocks), Rapid bay, Wirrina breakwater, Myponga Rocks, Bluff Jetty, Causeway, Screwpile Jetty.......have even heard of one being caught in Encounter Lakes on a soft plastic aimed at Bream...

Around Adelaide might be worth a go too - have seen them caught at Noarlunga, brighton (there is a nice weed patch at the end teeming with them), and Glenelg - outer harbour and the north haven breakwater are worth a go too.......Have also heard of them being taken in West Lakes....

If you get into a boat, drift with prawn style jags around marino/hallet cove, or between Wirrina and Rapid Bay, and around Cape Jervis - plenty of squid being caught out from the caves at Rapid bay - boat limits (45) being taken in no time at all - good size ones too.....

If you feel like travelling - Port Hughes has plenty, Pt Riely near Wallaroo holds plenty, as does the Wallaroo jetty, and moonta bay jetty.

Paulus - do yourself a favour - join www.fishsa.com and you'll learn plenty about fishing/squidding in SA!!!

Cheers!

Hey Jon!

Have Been browsing through your website......When are you getting some of those underwater lights back in, as i have been looking for something like that for awhile - to use maybe off jetties at night, and for a popular activity here - gar dabbing (in a boat with a light, scooping the gar off the top of the water - a very good table fish are the garfish).....

Also, how do i order from you - as couldnt find anything on the site, and how much is the shipping costs to Australia??

Cheers!

Nathan

Hey Paulus - how come your profile says your birthday is 21 March, and not April???
