Greece squid fishing

Hi, If you have any experience squid fishing in Greece then please tell us about it. Particularly, we would like to know in what regions squid fishing is popular in Greece. Also, what are "squid jigs" called in the Greek language? What type/species of squid do you catch in Greece?



Any photos would be helpful.



Also, I think ΚΑΛΑΜΆΡΙ means "squid" in greek. Is that correct?

Also does ΨΆΡΕΜΑ mean fishing?

Hi Glen,



In greek squid jigs are called, KALAMARIERES.

The different types of squid are identical to our Cephalopods <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I named them in a previous post, they look exactly like what our cuttlefish/squid/calamari look like:

ΚΑΛΑΜΆΡΙ means calamari in greek (southern calamri) <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' />



ΨΆΡΕΜΑ does mean fishing <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wh' />

The Cephalopods are widespread around the coastal areas of greece and you would catch them at similar types of areas as you would here, ie weedbeds, edges of reefs etc.



I have only fished there on 2 ocassions whilst on holidays but i never tried catching any squid.

yep you got the singular and plural of squid jig(s) right



When i was over last year i stumbled across 2 tackle shops and remember seeing yozuri brand squid jigs. I had a chat with my dad and he reckons alot of people just make up their own jigs. I doubt you will find a greek commercial squid jig manufacturer ,....

To begin with,sorry for my english cause as you can see is very pour.

Now,about fishing squid in greece,well ive been fishing squid in cyprus which is close by for the last 3-4 years(been fishing in general for over 20 years).

The techniques are similar to those that i've read about on the internet for squid fishing all around the world.

We basically have a squid jigg,generally (yo juri),rapalla,and a couple of other brands,that we put it on a spinning rod,and cast it from piers that have lighs on at night time.

We catch squid in this way only during the months of december-march.When for us is basically mid winter to early spring and at no other time.

The same seams to apply for boat fishing of squids here in cyprus which is basically also exclusively done only by amatuer fishermen.The only difference is that they troll their squid jiggs near the shore line at night time from 4 - 30 meters of water and at no deeper waters(maximum 1 km from the cost).

We have never caught a squid during the summer or during the day,always at night time,some times professionals catch squids on their fisnets that they lay across the sea floor like a fence for a couple of km.

Apparently they go into much deeper waters,but there is no one here in cyprus who catches them in this situation. I,ve read on the net about people in japan and other places that have huge boats and fish squid in very industrial ways(look around the net to understand what i mean). But as for cyprus fishermen its a no go situation,since they don't have the means nor do i know if even they did that it would be economicaly vaible for them to do so.

Hi there !!

My name is Denis and I'm from Egion, a small city at the north coast of Peloponisos in Greece.

Let's start answering your questions:

1) My squid fishing experience is only 2 years old.

2) As far as I know, squid fishing is popular all over the Greece. I hope that other members from Greece will join us and let us know about more.

3) "Squid jigs" are called ΚΑΛΑΜΑΡΙΕΡΕΣ (kalamarieres). Τhere are also ΘΡΑΨΑΛΙΕΡΕΣ (thrapsalieres), because here in Greece there are 2 types of Squids : ΚΑΛΑΜΑΡΙΑ and ΘΡΑΨΑΛΑ. (I'll try to download some photos)

ΚΑΛΑΜΑΡΙΑ are small, from 10cm-50cm, pink-white colored and they have big "wings"

ΘΡΑΨΑΛΑ are big, often very big, and some times ....very,very,very big ones. Personaly I've seen one more than 1m long, and more than 10 Kg wheight. They are red-brown colored, and they have small "wings" as you can see in the photo.

My personal record is a 3,5 Kg ΘΡΑΨΑΛΟ. (See photo)

that squid you are holding is what we in Australia call an Arrow Squid... I have been through Egion and a number of other peloponese towns, what a beautiful part of greece those costal towns are.. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />



I had a fish for squid off the skala at Neapoli last august when i was holidaying at Peloponiso but no success <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

Just got back from a brief visit to Thessaloniki. If you have a few hours to kill here then its easy to catch cuttlefish from the seafront here. Theres a small fishing stall by the port at the end of the promenade where you can get a handline and a couple of jigs for a few Euros. Judging by the ink stains you can catch them along most of the promenade. The ones I caught were quite small (200g or so) and were caught in the middle of the day on a small prawn style jig with a small weight about 30cm in front of the jig. From what I understood (and this might be wrong!) the squid proper only come inshore during the winter.

Hi to all!



My experience is very short. I tried to fish squids (and actually caught one!) during my summer vacation in Tinos island, Cyclades. My girlfriend, at her first attempt caught 5 squids in about 2 hours (talking about beginner's luck... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> ). No need to say that all the locals who were fishing with us, took off after the third squid of my sweetheart... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />



The fishing took place at a pier, in the evening (21:00-23:00). No rods were used, only a fishing line (PETONIA'). The locals told us that the season for squids in Tinos is from late August till Christmas, with better chances in October and November.

more accurately we are "squiding" by end of August-December and then again by end February-April...

As far as I know, squids are just passing by Greece feeding while they are moving to the rest of Mediterranean...

if you ever come again in Peloponnese, try to fish squids in Epidaurus...

you can catch many arrow squids there, especially in October-November

Hi again Glen,

we are manufacturing the jigs... yes they look like "the others" (from Japanese, Korean, Croatian or even Chinese companies), but the difference is on the details and more important in the quality!

For example, there are no problems in buoyancy/balance, water resistance, hook take-offs, to name a few... and we are always focus to improve them continuously

Sounds like it's not a good time for squid though I'll be looking <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/images2.jpg' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='q:' /> . Has anyone experience of this type of small boat fishing around Samos?
