Sure you can fish during the day. Sometimes there are loads of them sometimes it is slow. You just have to hit it at the right time. About 10-12 days ago they hit at low tide @ 1PM and hit heavy until 4PM. Many people got at least a 5 gallon bucket, some got 10 gallons. I hope to go again this afternoon.
I just returned from the Goat Island Causeway area, bucketed 8 squid in ten minutes then nothing for the next hour. They're still there...just have to wait them out.

My work schedule is tough. So is it better to aim for low or high tide. Or is squid fishing any given day type action all together. Thanks for the imput.
Unclemeat,
What time did it get really tight? Do people stick around until sunrise fishing? I can stay local and come later if people leave and make room.
I am driving down from MA, and don't need to get into it, after driving over an hour to just fish?
It only gets tight when there is a good bite, and people tend to crowd you if you are catching. There is plenty of room to fish there anytime.
We fished last night, it was very good. Went back up this afternoon, it was not good at all. I did not catch any, my friend caught 2.

I have had success on low, high, incoming and outgoing tides. I believe (though, I have no scientific evidence, just observations) that the schools pass through the area, if there is enough baitfish they hang around, then move on. They then make their rounds to other spots and pass through again and continue the cycle throughout the day and night. The lights of the bridge and the lanterns used by fishermen tend to hold them in the area longer once they get there at night because the baitfish are attracted to the light. Hope this helps.

I was there last night, from 6pm to midnight. Most people caught 1 to 5. Not sure it is the end of the season, or just a particular day.

I did from sun 12:00 am through 5:00 am. and the result was not bad because me and my friend got total 60 squid. but the size was pretty much small..
I think we can enjoy fishing one or two more week.... also, striper is around here so if you use whole squid as a bait, you might get the good size of keeper....
I saw a person who got the good size of striper today....

I was at the Goat Island bridge late yesterday and had very little success. Although there were some folks that were doing very well.
I watched and tried to mimic everything they were doing and was using the same jigs for color amd size but even when standing right alongside them I got nothing.
So somebody please tell me what the trick is to this. There has to be something that I am not getting or doing, some little secret or trick that I can't figure out.
Is this all about feel?

It happens to me all the time. Frustrating isn't it! I have no idea why. Last week I was jigging for 20 minutes with nothing. Someone comes and stands next to me and get 6 right way. I want to throw them off the bridge! But then sometimes I am getting them and people next to me are not. Who can figure??? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

When the squid aren't biting well, they are often still around, just not hitting what you are throwing them. Often what works well is to use extra small size jigs, as the squid are less shy to grab them than the larger jigs. We have some new jigs that have been working very well in this manner. Our smallest jig (Micro Prawn) is a size 1.0 and is 1.5" including hooks, with size 1.5 being 2" including hooks.
We have some customers that use these especially when the fishing gets slow. They will put just one on the end of the line and cast it out by itself. Just giving a tiny jerk just to show movement. The squid hit it when it's slowly sinking. VERY PRODUCTIVE!!!

Has anyone been getting any squid?
I am wondering if they have moved out or are still around.
I heard the Frances Fleet was still doing night squid trips as of last weekend but have heard nothing from Newport.

It's pretty much over in Newport, although you may get one or two, no big numbers. There are still schools of them off the beaches, but thet are very small.
I am done with local squidding for this year, have plenty in the freezer for eats and bait. My next squidding adventure begins on Saturday evening, fishing for giant humbolt squid in the Sea of Cortez....can't wait to hook in to some of those big boys, hear they put up quite the battle.

A few nights ago I was slowly reeling in a small blue and white plug and felt a mild "tug", I reeled in a squid about 4" body length in Newport Harbor. I may start targeting them later this week and will let you know if they are in in earnest.

Where do you guys buy your jigs in RI (what's the name of a good, reputable shop)? I'm taking a trip out there in October to see inlaws and want to squid fish - also, where should I go? Does anyone do squid fish charters out there that you know of?
Thanks, Squig

Squiggy there is a tackle shop right up the road from the Goat Island bridge that has a bunch of great squid jigs. I will see about getting you more information and post it here.

Hey, thanks! Maybe I can call them ahead of time if I can get their name or something. What type of jigs work best in your area?
