Newport, Ri - 2006 Squid Season
Hightide in Newport is about 11PM tonight.. anyone going to try his luck ?
i read that you can get ticketed for fishing on the pedestrian side of the goat island wharf? since when??
I saw someone get a ticket the other day for just stopping their car on the bridge to retreive their fishing gear. A State trooper got him. What a rat!

For at least the last 13 years fishing on the south side of the causeway is prohibited. There used to be signage there in several languages. It was made that way so one side could be open for pedestrians. I think they should post new signs as many people do not see the faded ones that are left.

The city ordinance is....

12.32.070. Fishing from Goat Island Causeway—Prohibited.

A. No person shall take or attempt to take any fish or marine wildlife products from the water of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay by way of fishing pole, fishing line, wire, or the like, while said person is on the southerly part of the roadway, walkway, sidewalk, or railing of the Goat Island Causeway, or the designated boat channel area on the north side of the causeway.

B. No person shall cast overhead while fishing from the Goat Island Causeway.

C. Temporary Restrictions.

1. Intent. Each spring, for a period of time, a large concentration of squid is prevalent in the waters off the Goat Island Causeway. The resulting numbers of people fishing from the Goat Island Causeway often creates public safety hazards in terms of traffic and pedestrians safety, and health and sanitation conditions, on the Goat Island Causeway and adjacent areas.

2. In response to the concerns described above, the following temporary parking restriction shall be in place on the Goat Island Causeway from April 24th to June 7th, annually:

Parking in the paved area adjacent to the causeway itself shall be limited to no more than two hours.

3. Should the above-mentioned public safety concerns not be present to a sufficient degree to warrant the implementation of this temporary parking restriction, then it shall not become effective. The director of public safety is authorized to make said determination and shall direct the posting of the necessary signage. (Ord. 38-93 § 1, 1993: prior code § 1026.14)
anybody been getting any squid lately? in good numbers? i'h heading up tonight after work @ midnight. hopefully i'll have good news to share tomorrow morning. this weather has been horrific. and it looks like rain again from friday to tuesday. enough already.
A friend keeps his boat at Warwick Neck so it is a short run South. You can launch at a public ramp at Wickford or look at a map for driving directions. I beleive it is near Sea Freeze Bait
Thanks.
Thanks for the recent reports. I live in CT an hour from Newport and was thinking of going tonite. I called Edwards tackle there and they said it's been slow, with gusty wind predicted, so perhaps a different night will be better.

I've been bitten by the the squidfishing bug! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> I went for the first time a couple of weeks ago to Greenport NY and it was so much fun - can't wait to get out again soon. It's a riot.

This is a great site! I've been reading it for a while now - lots of great info - thank you everyone for sharing such good info and tips! We've been discussing squid a lot recently on www.ctfisherman.com - a fishing site from Connecticut in the US.

Hopefully I'll have a good report to post soon! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I think I just may give it a try again tonight from the causeway. Hope they are there this time.
I was at New Port last night from 8pm - 11pm get total 33 squids. (2 weeks ago bites was much better, 4pm-9pm got 110 squids)

Will try again tonight... Hopefully I got more lucks

Order few jigs from JON COLMAN (it's on the way), can't wait until I try them out...
Ended up with several dozen. One thing is for sure, there are some very rude and inconsiderate people fishing on that bridge. Can't imagine what it is like on a Friday or Saturday night. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
was bad last night, get 30 squids from 7pm-1am..

Anyone knows when will the squid fishing season end ?
@Newport .. squids still biting like crazy ...

I was there from Sunday, May 21 @7am-10:45am (got around 15 squids).

When i start to leave, it bites like crazy around at 11am...

From what I heard Saturday 5/20 @8:30pm - 10pm ... people got buckets full.
Went last night for a few hours, had several dozen after an hour.

I was there last night as well. My first time ever. To the regulars, thanks. I was only able to find a single lure at Walmart, and was sold one there by a fellow fishing next to me, that worked well. Today, I found a local dealer in Natick, and got a bunch more Yo-Zuri lures. (assorted colors) I noticed some guys to my right were getting more success. I am not sure if it was the technique, or the spot. (Could 15 feet make that much of a difference?) I brought a gas lamp and threw it over, so I had that going form me. The wind robbed me of warmth dispite the several layers, I luckily thought to put on. I recommend you dress like you are headed out in the winter when that wind gets whipping. It was begining to make me ask what I was doing out there. I finally left around 2am as I needed to drive back to MA 1.5 hours. Got lost. Got home at 4am.

I'd like to fish the weekend but worry about it being too crowded. I am pretty cool about letting people fish in close to me, wonder if the regulars are as willing to let everyone have the fun?

I'd like to extend a big bird to the fools that insisted on laying on the horn going by. And a high five to everyone else.

I learned a lot in one night and look forward to filling my pail for years to come. I was hoping to fill my pail last night, I was able to pack a gallon zip lock with them, which beats nothing.

Cheers

DrC
Just got back from the causeway, good night, some near full buckets for the sharpies. Going striper fishing today, then back to the causeway.

Some were not to happy about people trying to squeeze in tonight, I thought for sure they were gonna start fighting.

The squid run has magically picked up again, with the day bite being very good the last 3 days running. If you can keep the stripers off you at night, it is good as well. The brighter the lights, the less harassment by the "pesky" fish.

Unclemeat,

What time did it get really tight? Do people stick around until sunrise fishing? I can stay local and come later if people leave and make room.

I am driving down from MA, and don't need to get into it, after driving over an hour to just fish?
The bite was fairly good late Wednesday afternoon just before high tide.

SO are you saying that the bridge can be fished at any time now, including during the day? If so what is the best time. I have only been out one time. Watched everyone arround me pull up squid left and right I caught one.
Sure you can fish during the day. Sometimes there are loads of them sometimes it is slow. You just have to hit it at the right time. About 10-12 days ago they hit at low tide @ 1PM and hit heavy until 4PM. Many people got at least a 5 gallon bucket, some got 10 gallons. I hope to go again this afternoon.
