Newport, Ri - 2006 Squid Season
#61
Good stuff! I too took my first squid...or first 10 or so last weekend. I spoke with a friend of mine and he told me the best way to cook them is to marinade in half and half for about 30 mins before breading and frying. I guess this drastically improved the texture. I personally don't eat calamari but instead use it to catch fluke. My brother and his friends got me into the squid jigging thing and i love it. Lookin forward to getting out tomorrow night and hopefully filling a bucket.
went squidding last night in the wind and rain. caught 36 squid in just under an hour and a half. i decided to leave when my squid-light ran out of batteries.

i have been using my homemade squid-light for 3 seasons and it works like gangbusters... it's just a waterproof flashlight rubberbanded to a spool of 60 pound test, anchored with a 6 or 10 ounce bank sinker.

I usually rubberband it facing up and send it to the bottom... but sometimes i rubberband it facing down and hang it a foot under the surface.

I came up with this rig because gas generators and halogen lamps are simply not in my budget.
nice diagram. I'm gonna have to give that a shot

Very cool about that Brinkman light! Ordered one online yesterday from Ace Hardware. It's being delivered today. WOW! I think I'll take my boat to the Quonset docks and try my luck with my new light. Any ideas where I can get some chum?

We have had quite a few people in Rhode Island that are stringing our underwater fishing lights together, and then dropping them down below where they are fishing. Basically having a gap of 2-3 feet between each light. The lights use 2-AA batteries, and is quite bright. Makes a fairly inexpensive and PORTABLE squid lighting setup. Lights are about 6 inches long.

Hi,

I'm going to the Causeway today. Do you think if I go before high tide that's a good time? Good to hear you're catching.

Thanks,

Kevin

I went the bridge a day before. Got 21 squid. They're still there. Most of other guys were catching them pretty constantly. I just need to practice to pull the rod, when they bite. I lost too many. One guy taught me how to do it. If you are here, "thanks a lot buddy, I'll practice that. And one day, I hope I'll be like you. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />"

I know this is off topic but does anyone know if MACKEREL has moving in the area? I fish MA area last year during this time of the year got bucket full of mackerel, and squid fishing was pretty good too at Newport.

hey guys i couldn't get enough of the squid lastnite saturday. so i came back on sunday at 11 am and fished till 4 pm i managed to get 2 full 5gallon buckets full of squid. the water was coming down and they were biting like crazy everyone was pulling up squid left and right doubles and triples. they were everywhere. i was on the bridge after the frist pole and stayed there the bite was constant. it was the hot time for them. i filled up my buckets and had no more room for squid so i had to go home. they were still biting when i left. i got in total 250 good size squid.

You're killing me. I was trying to decide between Dartmouth, MA and Newport and hit Dartmouth where the only hit I got was a schoolie striper, no squid at all. Drat.

Hey, that's the same time I was there today. I was fishing with my two boys on the side where the cars park. We were bangin em left and right too! First time for my boys, they loved it, we got about 150 as well. I used those Martinetti's that were advertised here, every color hit! What a day! The bridge was shoulder to shoulder and we could see them pulling squid out of the water in a constant stream.

same here. Went up friday night and fished from about 7:30pm til around 6am . Btwn 3 of us, we got 299 squid. 1 off of 300 <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> They were there in full force, just huge schools under the bridge from about 11pm til the time we left. It was friggin NUTS and it seemed like the squid just kept getting bigger and bigger as the night went on

How big were those sqid cant really tell from the picture how big that cooler is. I was up there a week ago and cought around 8" squid but I have seen much bigger squid in there before. I was just coriuos if the bigger squid are moving in now.
#79
i assure you the bigger squid are there. THe biggest ones we caught were around 20" and we caught A LOT of them. The average size must've been around 15" or more
