Hey guys,

does anyone know any good spots or reefs for spearfishing on the peninsula.

i want to get started this summer and am pretty knew at it only been once and would appreciate any advice out there.

where do you live on the peninsula?



i go out flinders and get heaps of anything thats on the menu such as big flathead, butterfish, whiting, and yeah its good i have a little spot near the jetty and i get bag limits of abalone greenlip/blacklip limit only 2 black lip? and i think 10 greenlip!

Other way round.......10 total abalone including a max. of 2 greenlip, and greenlips have a very restricted open season so be careful.

i went out at flinders once very mirky water all i saw was a ray and a couple of toadfish

Does anyone know any good spots or reefs for spearfishing (hand held spear fishing that is) on the peninsula. because i started going out spear fishing last year and by the end of the season i was sick of going to the same old places.

Flinders isn’t too bad, but you have to make sure you pick you day right. The first time I went there spear fishing there the water was super clear, and I got 3 grass whiting about 40cm each, 2 leatherjackets about 35cm each, an arrow squid, and 2 parrot fish about 28cm each, and I was only in the water for about 2 hours. But then when I went back about a month later to the exact same spot I got 1 or 2 leather jackets about 25cm each, and thats it, the water was a bit misty, but just good enough to see a few things, but it still made it a ###### day. So like I said, you just have to pick the right day when going to Flinders.

I noticed quite a few people asking were some good spear fishing spots are with lots of reef and fish on the Peninsula, but no one really answering there questions.

So I put down some of the spots that I go to, and the regular types of fish you’ll see there.

And if you read this and know of any other reef spear fishing places that I don’t have, that you know of that are good, then add a reply to this topic and let me and other people know, because I’m always looking for new places to go for a dive and hunt fish



A few good spots are:

OLIVER’S HILL = Goat Fish, Butterfish, Flatheads, “LOTS” of Leatherjackets

Mt MARTHA PILLARS = Flathead, Parrot Fish, Leatherjackets, Rock Cods, Abalone

ALL ALONG ESPLANADE = Due Fish, Mullet, Salmon, Abalone, Leatherjackets

FISHERMAN’S BEACH = Boarfish, Leatherjackets, Sweep, Flatheads, Goatfish, and the odd Due fish, and Luderick (hard to get tho)

ROYAL BEACH + SNAPPER POINT = Leatherjackets, Goat fish, Butter Fish, Cuttlefish

BIRD ROCK = Leatherjackets, Flatheads, Rock Cods, and Red Rock Cod (watch out for Red Rock Cods tho, its spin pricked me in the finger when putting in my catch bag and my whole hand swelled up and it really really hurt for ages)

I beento flinders wer da surfer r. but i dnt c any fish, hoe deep do i have to go?I went about 4-5 meters deep. adn theree is greenlip in flinders?

ok then, on the left of the pier where the rocks extend out to there will be a rocky ledge dive down and look along or under it, it goes for miles.!



also fish are at the rocky ledge and there are great fish at the very end of the pier because there is an old boat suncken heaps of butterfish and leather jackets <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />



flat head under to the left of the pier half way down.

G,day people, I am new to the spearfishing scene and am looking forward to getting into this sport. my daughter (10 years old ) and I live in mornington so any advice as to where to dive would be a great place to start, p.s. if anyone knows good spots on peninsula I dont mind picking them up and driving them back.

I am also a newbie. I live in Melbourne (Doncaster) and just learning to snorkel etc. so looking for places to go. Went out to Flinders yesterday but didn't see too much (maybe looking in the wrong spot!). Would love to know of some good places to go.

There are quite a few suggestions for places to spear, both close to Melbourne and further afield, in some older threads in this forum. I have always found that the further you are willing to drive, the more quality fish you will see, but of course it's a pain to drive 3 hours each way just for a few hours in the water.



Kako, I have heard some good reports about spearing at Flinders, however it's best when the water is clear (ie/ give it a miss this week!). I'd be heading far to the right of the pier, entering the water near the rocks, and trying to dive a low tide.



If you don't mind swimming over sand, you're always a chance for flathead and flounder early in the morning at most of the beaches close to Melbourne. But swimming over sand is boring compared to, for example, swimming over reef at Mornington or Mt Eliza.

i dnt care where i got as long as i have some fun and catch sum fish... but im not to good at the second one right now i just startd...cud anyone tell how far out or deep i sould go..for spearing...and how deep for floundering

I doesn't really matter how deep you go spearing. I have seen quite large fish up to about 4kg in water less than a meter. The fish were groper that were hiding under heavy rock cover. I have also seen quite large flathead in water less than a meter. At night the fish move in even closer.

G'day there champs.

After a fishless 12 month stint in the mines I have finaly returned to the homeland of Rye where I hope to pillage the ocean floors in search of the suculent seafood delights which dwell beneath.

So, If anyone knows where the fish and the abs and the crays and the likes are in abundance on the mornington peninsula this time of year, let us all know the recomended times of day and tides etc.
