I voted for the baited pilchards, as i wouldnt dare waste a whiting on squid............But i usually use tommies or gar...........

i too, voted for the baited pilchard.

on many occasions i have pulled little squid out of the water as they were attached on my 3gang baited pilchard rig while fishing for tailor, during the nite.



for baited squid jigs, i usually bait a yellowtail or tailor as their flesh is much tougher than the pilchard's, and it can withstand much more abuse than the soft pilchard flesh.

Your dead right profesas, I agree with you totally.



Pillies are good too but they tend to break out quite easily and sometimes this can be a good thing because it helps to attracts little fish.



However it's most likely your gonna find yourself feeding the little fish rather then actual <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> we after.



I normally have one rod setup with fresh yellowtail on float and another rod with Yo-Zuri (The Best squid lures) to greater my chance.

baited pilchard all the way, problem with most peoples limited sucess with pilchards is that on some days squid just wont take a huge bait so by varieing pilchard sizes and sometimes trying a 1/2 or 3/4 pillie will produce the goods as for jigs oz-zuro tackle in pink and gold outfishes yo-zuris almost everytime and cheeper.

Hello all, I'm new to this site and it seems that the styles for catching squid differs quite a bit between the mainland U.S and Hawaii. I myself prefer ss shanks with double umbrella hooks with cleaned squid turned inside out, cut into a strip that will wrap around the shank once, tied on with dental floss (if pickey) or with really fine copper wire (if aggressive). It is really neat to hear of other rigs and techniques being used.
