Aussie anglers glad to be short of a squid

A worldwide shortage of squid has come at the right time for Australian anglers, with the opening of the local season this week.

Prices are set to rise by 30 per cent, after two bad seasons in the world's biggest squid fishing region, the Falkland Islands, off South America.

In Victoria, Portland fisherman Craig Stewart says bad luck elsewhere, will help local anglers to stay afloat.

"We got around about $1.30; this year we're looking to get $1.80.

"That's certainly good, because our fuel prices have gone up: if we didn't get a 20 to 30 per cent increase in price we would actually be forced to tie up, we'd actually be losing money.

"As much as it's positive the price has gone up, it jolly well had to, or else we'd be looking down our noses."
