Hi adam, Thats sounds great! I have seen schools of salmon pass by while snorkelling but they usually go past so quickly that there is no chance to catch them.
I am hanging to catch some leatherjackets. i think they make terrific eating.

Yeh Glen, Leatherjackets are one of my farourite eating fish, nice firm flesh, mmmm...
There are alot around there at the moment, but you need small, longshank hooks, otherwise they'll bite you off.
happened to me a few times, with the bigger fish(couldnt land 'em)
i think i used size 10 longshank hooks..

Hi everyone,
I know some people that went to Mt Martha on Thursday and it was terrible. Oh well, on a brighter note, I went surf fishing today (saturday) and got a nice salmon around 1 kilo plus some small stuff. (near Kilcunda which is near Phillip Island)

I went fishing at mt martha on friday, and the action was hot..
I did more fishing than squidding cos a few secconds after i cast it, i was on, and ended up with about 15 fish in around 2hrs .. Mostly leatherjackets..
Got pritty sunburnt aswell! it was bloody hott!!!

hey Glen,
I got a question:
next time I head down to mt martha, i wanna actually do some serious squidding, and I was thinking of using two rods, one for fish, and one for squid. What is the best kind of jig to use down there? yo zuri style or baited? casting and retreving or under a float? how do you usually rig up when you fisg there?
any info will be great!

Hi Adam,
If I am going to fish with two rods, then I put out a squid jig under a float so I am free to actively fish the other rod. I like the yamashita style size 2 jigs. during the day you could use a green one. in the afternoon and evening I like to use a pink one.
I have never seriously tried baited jigs so can't comment on if that would be more successful or not.
As it gets darker (and there are more squid feeding), I would actively fish the squid jig (without a float) and forget about the other rod.
That is my method.

Hi all,
I went to Mt Martha on Sunday. I got 2 leatherjackets and 5 medium/small squid.
The squid only appeared just on dark. There was quite a few around and I lost a few. Some were a bit timid and followed the jig but would not grab on. I stopped fishing around 9pm. The days are getting longer! This is great....summer is here.

is thwere any chance you could explain in more details how excatly do you use float and jig together, like what size of float and stuff like that.....i would like to try to fish for squid using float but im not sure how to set it up

float fishing glen style - i use wine cork cut in half as my float. i cut a slit into the cork with a sharp knife to the centre of the cork. i then wrap my fishing line into the slit about 4 times. Done. I usually put the float a metre or so above the jig.
The jigs i am using are light and would not pull the float under. if you use very heavy jigs then you will need a bigger float.

im just about to go morrdialoc pier to try to catch my first squid........with your float fishing style how to you know that squid grabbed your jig.....does the float go down or sideways.......how can you tell if the squid grabbed the jib?

the jig will get pulled under or move sideways like you said.
also read the comments of supersquid in the Queenscliff discussion. he reckons that baited jigs work better than artificial jigs under floats. he is probably right.

well i went to mornington pier last night fished from 9pm till 1am and didnt get a bite i was using small orange glow in the dark jig but no luck....now on public holiday on monday i will go to mt martha near bradford road to try my luck there and hopefully ill catch my first squid there <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

did you see any squid at mornington under the lights? If squid are there you can usually see them chase the jigs.

Is mornington pier open again now? It was closed for storm damage repairs last time i was there (a few months ago).

yes there is way to many people at morninton pier thats why i usually go late at night and still its hard to find a spot
im going tomorow afternoon to mt martha to try my luck there i will let you guys know how i went

i went today at mt martha fished of the rocks near bradford rd
fished from 3pm till 7pm
