People will ride out the showers and then fish when the rain lays out and retreat when it turns up. There are a few in rain gear and will tough out the conditions. Yes, Squids are in!!!
Cousteau, you say you filled a 10 gallon bucket!? That's a big bucket!!! a 5 gallon bucket will fill about 25-30 pounds of squid.
Oops! You're absolutely right, my bad. 5 gallon bucket, 66 squid, and the weight was just an estimate. Sorry, I guess I typed before I really thought about it...
I went the bridge last night from NY. It took almost 4 hours to get there. It was rainning and windy and cold. I and my wife arrived on 9 pm and there were almost 100 people most of them were chinese fishing on the edge of the bridge.
I and my wife have never had fished squid before. This is first time for us to fish squid.
And guess what, we fished 36 squid within 2 hours. It was very cold and rainning, so we left there about on 12 am.
Those squid were in the bottom, few feet above from the bottom. So you ain't get them from surface. We spent an hour to figure this out.
We ate it by raw "Sashimi" with sy sauce and wasabi. It was great taste, even it has sweetness.
It has bee quite some time since I have caught squid so a friend and I tried to give it a shot Thursday night. We used a boat and started at the causeway because we did not know any better. We ran all around the lower bay and then finally got into them at a spot a dive buddy suggested. We only caught 120-150 squid while the others were catching three times as many. It was a perfect night out there even though it was a little chilly. I may go again just to catch them for chum to use this summer. It took me 5 hours to clean my share.
Good job Newbie! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' /> You shouldn't hate squid but just love them... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' /> I hear of people who are making serious cash selling squid by the buckets to fishermen off the causeway... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' />
Hope you had a good time Harry... I was surprise to hear that there was around 100 people there in the cold. I figured there only be around 25 die hard squidders. Yes the squid are fished off the bottom. Make sure to raise your rod softly and take it easy. There's no need to whip your rod like a maniac. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I am so.........................sad....and......disappointed.........................
.ã .ã
I went to Causeway on Saturday with my family.
I was expecting only rain...but...the wind.. was too strong and cold to fish.
There were heaps of cars parked, and people were just waiting for the wind to be calmed down....and....I was waiting until Sunday 11am....nothing got better....
I guess, I picked a wrong day to fish..but..I am not giving up...I will go back this weekend again.
Good job Harry!!
You shoud try Korean hot sauce for the Sashimi...^^
how long will the season last? I only caught 16 last Friday, and want to try again end of this month, like 27-29 weekend. I am not sure they will still be there or not at that time?

Sometimes the mackeral come in and scatter the squid. There were some mackeral there this morning.
Catch report: Monday morning -- my ffriend caught about 100 pounds of squid.
Tuesday morning -- my wife and I filled a 5 gallon pail plus a smaller bucket -- preety large crowd for a Tuesday morning -- most people were filling a bucket.

I pulled an all-nighter with 2 friends on one of their boats and we only managed about 75 squid combined. The other boats were doing much better.
What were we doing wrong? We used 3 Yo-zuri #2 jigs (blue and pink) tied about 18" apart with a 1oz or 2oz weight tied below. We fished the bottom as well as mid-water and had less sucess than everyone else.
Sounds like you put in a lot of work without a lot of success.
My personal recommendation for one is to use a weighted squid jig on the bottom, we have some that are 1oz and ideal for a bottom jig. Have had other customers do very well this way, and actually caught over half of their squid on the weighted jig.
I'm not sure which yo-zuri jigs you were using, but I definitely recommend using luminous glow in the dark jigs. You do need to remember to charge up the glow in the dark jigs with an electric light though, which will add to your success. Size 1.5 - 2.5 are good sizes.

i put the weighted jig on the bottom, and caught my first one. I was so surprised that the squid didn't pick up the other two pink lures. I got a snag later, however, lost the weighted jig and another pink. I used the left luminous pink one to fish from evening to night and got totally 16.
At night, a guy on my left who kept jigging caught a squid every 3 minutes, and another guy on my right who didn't jig kept pulling squid every minute. I tried to ask him how come he didn't jig and got even more squids than other people and didn't get an answer from him. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> I guess the current may jig the lure.
Someone said there were 100 Chinese fishing there, actually they were not Chinese. Because I can't understand their language, so I can't get the trick <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/innocent.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' />

Here are some extracts from the latest fishing report in the Providence Journal -
[color="blue"]Fishing report - Friday, May 13, 2005
At the mouth of the Bay, there are plenty of fish in the 20-pound class pursuing squid, according to Sam Toland of Sam's Bait & Tackle, who says the squid run is the largest in years. It should continue through the full moon on May 23, Toland predicts.
On Wednesday, Ray Wedge caught both squid and mackerel in Newport, said David Henault of Ocean State Tackle. Jigging at Fort Getty is inconsistent, but worth a shot.
Are the yo-zuri jigs luminous or not? It doesn't say on the box and web site.
