Great Ocean Road Spearfishing
#1
Hi guys,

I went spearfishing with some friends down the Great Ocean Road on Saturday, the swell was the smallest I have ever seen on this coast, which is usually very rough at the best of times. I dived at a few different spots between Lorne and Apollo Bay, here are some pictures of my catch.

Cheers

Jaz

Hey Ange

No mate, I didn't manage to find any! I was looking, but I wasn't on SCUBA on Saturday, so struggled to find many likely spots with just breath hold diving.

There were MANY commercial cray pots set all along the coast, so they are there!

Hey guys

I have been trying to catch a cray or two for a few months now. I only snorkell though, no scuba. Some people tell me that crays can be found in water less than a meter deep as long as there is suitable ground cover. Is this true? Also I have been told that a "cray snare" can be helpful when getting crays. Someone told me that you put like a noose over the cryas feelers and then pull tight, securing the cray. I thought that maybe the feelers would break. Any tips on how to cathc crays and where to look for them.

Thanks SAUCE <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I'm sure people have told you that cray snares are useful to help you catch crays, but THEY ARE ILLEGAL! Fisheries will confiscate all your gear and fine you if you're caught using a snare. They are legal in WA I think, but in victoria you can only legally catch crays by hand.

Yes crays can be caught in waters <1m deep, the key, as you have said, is finding area with appropriate cover. And this doesn't mean just rocks, it means holes, crevasses, caves and similar types of cover. If there are no holes for crays to hide in, you won't find any in that area, simple as that. Quite a few times I have gone over a reef very thoroughly, and found just 1 hole in the entire reef.....that contained 5-10 crays. Find the holes and you'll find the beasts!

As for grabbing them, best to go for the BASE of the feelers. If you grab them by the tips of the feelers they will snap off, the bases are very strong and spiny, and (mostly) stay attached to the cray.

Hi Jaz

Thanks for the info. The only thing that freaks me out about inspecting ledges and caves etc. is those mother conger eels! I have caught one on line before and it was huge! It looked like a python! Had nightmares about that beast! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> lol!

Thanks SAUCE <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

You don't need to worry about congers, they are not like morays, they won't try and take your hand off or anything! I don't see very many where I go, but I have had a few run-ins with big octopus trying to steal crays from my hand.

Do you eat the octopus? I have seen some large ones in Mallacoota lakes but have never bothered to eat them. I know you can pickle them but are they as good as squid or cuttlefish?

I love octopus, but I find I need to pound them with a mallet or else they are too tough. Great on the BBQ <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

hi new found, the octopus might have been alive when you released it but chances are it would have died afterwards.

Blue ring octopus are tiny, most of them have a body the size of a large walnut. Also, the blue rings are a bit of a giveaway........ <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

They are very shy, they spend most of the daylight hours hiding.

I've only seen big eels whilst looking for crays. Im always paranoid about sharks though! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
