Jibiki-ami Fishing In Japan - Squid Too
#1
Other than fishing, another hobby of mine is metal detecting the beaches here. Last weekend I was at the beach with my son and mid-morning lots of people arrived for an event, so we let them have the beach to themselves for an hour or so. A commercial fishing group arranged a long net that was dropped by boat just offshore and then pulled in by hand - two ropes. Have seen it done before so not so new for me, but the results (species and sizes) were quite impressive considering the excessive commercial and recreational fishing in the area. As they were hauling in the net it snagged on a very large metal frame of some sort, which took a while to bring in and resulted in some waiting time for the group. Some of the fish went into tanks and there was a short explanation of the different species. Squid were among them.

This activity (called "Jibiki-ami" in Japanese, meaning to drag a seine net) is actually a tourist activity in some areas of Japan. The tourists come by the busload and are charged a small fee to join. They get to take the fish home. Just need a sandy beach with a reasonably clear bottom to drag the net across.

Anyway please check out some of the pics (three pages of them) if you have an interest in that.

Thanks for the photos Ian!

I had a look through your photo gallery. Some of the fish you caught off the beach were very large. Not bad for an area that gets heavily fished!
