Hi,
Just wondering how you would rig a whole squid on a set of 3 gang hooks? Is there any special method? Would you include the tentacles as well or save them for whiting bait?
How do they rate as a snapper bait?

I don't think there is really any special method, and I would definatele leave the tentacles ON. Another way you could do it is by using 2 hooks, one at the bottom of the leader, and one hook snelled about 5-10cm above it (depending on the size of the squid you are using) - place the top hook in the top of the hood (this takes the weight of the bait), and put the bottom hook in the head of the squid with the point well exposed.
I am a huge fan of using squid for bait, and never leave home without some (when I'm leaving home to go fishing that is!). I only use squid for elephants and gummies, and they are also a top snapper bait. I don't think there are many fish that would refuse a fresh piece of squid.

if i were to rig squid on ganged hooks then it would have to be either a strip off the hood or a bit of tentacle. As for using squid as snapper bait, YES YES YES <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' />
I have caught my biggest snapper on a cuttlefish head, a mate caught his first gummy 5~6kg on an arrow squid head...
When fishing offshore, 50m depths, i use hardly anything else. You dont want a pillie being picked to bits after only being down for a couple of minutes and then having to wind in a 6oz sinker up 50m <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' />

thanks for the help.
By a strip of the hood does that mean you clean out the guts? as for squid heads is that just the eyes and beak part of the squid? Also, would flathead take squid?
I appreciate the help.

Once again thanks for the info.
What meant by the flathead question was that whether flatheads will take the bait intended to be for snapper. I hear they can be pests.
Also, i dont think i'd be trying this anytime soon, its too cold for me and i hear snapper season is long over <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
