Might be worth a go in the Moray Firth, see the report from the Scotsman in 2003 - should be able to catch them from the shore if you find the right place.

There is also a scientific publication describing the fishery. 'Fishing mainly occurs in the coastal waters from Troup Head (west of Fraserburgh) to Nairn and as far north as Wick. At the beginning of the season, catches are best in shallow water over hard (even rocky) ground close inshore in depths of around 10 m. As the season progresses, the fishery gradually moves further offshore to a sandy/muddy bottom in waters of around 55 m depth. Better catches have been reported in areas that experience stronger tidal currents.'

'...the season normally commenced around the middle of September and continued for around 8 or 9 weeks with the peak occurring in early October.'

thanks angus, here are some extracts from the article referred to above:

Quote:Hard-hit crews could be squids in

Tue 26 Aug 2003

FRANK URQUHART FISHERMEN in the Moray Firth, facing rapidly dwindling white-fish quotas, are enjoying an unexpected catching boom - thanks to an "explosion" of squid in their waters.

Skippers of up to 30 vessels, which normally catch cod, haddock and prawns, have been given a brief respite from the pursuit of pressured stocks in a lucrative "calamari" fishery - with virtually every box destined for the tables of seafood restaurants in Spain.

Some boats have reported landing 50 boxes of squid in a single haul, working close to the shore between Troup Head and Portknockie Head on the Moray Firth coast, near Banff and Macduff.

The discovery of the major squid fishery in the Moray Firth follows the recent revelations by the government’s Fisheries Research Services in Aberdeen that anchovies and sardines, which normally form important commercial fisheries in southern Europe, are being found in increasing numbers in Scottish waters.

Fishermen say the increasing appearance of these - and now squid - in Scottish waters backs their claims that rising sea temperatures may be the key to the fragile state of the cod stocks in the North Sea.

George MacRae, the secretary of the Scottish White Fish Producers’ Association, said the amount of squid being caught was unprecedented.

"In the past four weeks or so in the Moray Firth, there has been an explosion of a squid fishery," he said.

"The squid fishery is normally relatively small and confined to a few small boats, under ten metres, but this year it has been a very, very profitable fishery and some of our biggest white-fish boats have been trawling up and down the Moray Firth - sometimes only a few hundred yards off the shore - picking up squid in huge numbers. It is a non-pressure stock species, so there is no formal quota for it."

I hope that the Squid of Scotland don't become an Orange Roughie !! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

well it sounds like there are heaps of them so i would not worry too much! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> squid are a lot harder to wipe out than long lived deep sea fish like orange roughie

Quote:Study into viability of squid fishery

RESEARCH is under way to discover whether squid could become a viable commercial alternative for Scottish trawlermen, easing the pressure on fragile cod stocks and other threatened species.

It was revealed yesterday that the Seafish Industry Authority has launched a study with Aberdeen University, the Fisheries Research Service and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science to examine the potential of developing a sustainable squid fishery.

The demand for Scottish "calamari" is growing in Europe, but little is known about the stock dynamics.

2003 was indeed a good year for squid in the Moray Firth (I am not sure about 2004) however 2005 was another bumper year with boats finding squid close inshore in massive amounts. It is worth noting at this time that the squid caught by these vessels is only about 5-10cm long. As far as I am aware the fishery last year failed to materialise in anything like the abundqnce of previous years.

Similar catch rates of squid (of the same size) have been witnessed around Lundy Island in the SW of England in the past but intensive fishing effort from UK and French trawlers may be responsible for the collapse of this fishery approximately 7 years ago. A resurgence of squid in 2005 saw a return to increased trawling effort and in 2006 the squid again failed to materialise.

I leave you to draw your own conclusions

I have just learned that the SEAFISH research project funding has been pulled sometime during the past week or so... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Some fishing trials and observations were done last year, along with some sampling of squid landed in Aberdeen. From what I know, the bulk of the study was to start up soon...

FYI - I was at the fish market in Fraserburgh Saturday morning, and at least 10 boxes of squid were landed, with some of the boxes containing very large animals (Loligo forbesi). I also saw several large animals landed in Burghead last Wed, and noticed eggs on gear in Buckie and Macduff.

hi jennifer,

re: squid eggs on the gear..... does that mean the local fisherman are targetting spawning congregations of squid?

cheers, glen

Hi Glen,

Not that I know of - eggs were just attached to some creels and also brought up on some chains.
