Im heading up Point Leo/Flinders way this Saturday. Im just wondering if anyone has been before and can anyone share some tips on areas with good rock reef and plenty of fish. The melways seems to show alot of reef/rock near to the shore (inside the 5m depth marker) all along that western coast of westernport...but id rather take tips from someones first-hand experience.
Anyone on sharing...it would be much appreciated.

South of the pier around the point where the golf course is is pretty good.

I have only ever fished Flinders from a boat and kayak, never dived it. The area can be prone to poor viz, however if you get a clear day there are some good looking reefy areas to the far right of the pier (past the lifesaving/yacht club). Last time I fished off Shoreham (just down the coast from Flinders) we caught huge numbers of leatherjackets - so I would be keeping an eye out for them. This whole area is also renowned for some very big (40-50cm) whiting. A few trips ago we saw an inflatable boat return from the point with two SCUBA divers, who had some crayfish and abalone.

I'll probabely be out there on Saturday arvo myself. Havent had a look at the tides yet though. Even round the pier there's a few fish about. Theres a sunken boat just off the right had corner off the end of the pier where a few fish hang around too.

Hi everyone,
My old man and I use to fish low tide behind the golf course, very snaggy area but the quality of whiting was unbelievable - 45-55cm - nothing smaller. Always a lot of spearfisherman.
Isn't it a marine sanctuary now?

And has anyone fished the reefs at Phillip Island, how do they compare to Flinders (conditions etc)???

Like I said, I have never personally dived the area, but I have fished it by boat a fair bit - about half the time the water is very murky looking, half the time it is clear. We always do better on the squid when it is clear. Not sure what influences the murky water - probably tide/runoff or a combination of the two.
You know that a surfer was attacked by a seven gilled shark off flinders a few months ago - on a day when the water was very murky. (this is probably not what you want to hear!)

By snaggy, I meant that we lost a lot of rigs due to the reefy nature of the bottom in this area.

Jaz - NO NO NO not what i want to hear. But id rather be in the water with a mask on and flippers so i can see whats going on around me, than be the man on the surfboard with his legs aimlessly dangling in the water below! Anyway, I think we are diving the area left and right of the surf beach at Point Leo now. Seems to be good rock reef either side of the main beach. Aoushman - I get ya buddy, the snaggier the better for us divers...means that there is interesting geography and vegetation below. Thats where the fish love to be!
