Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season
Thanks for the positive info, Bill! I've never done it in the fall ... do you know if they start coming out out just after sunset in the fall too (which could be around 4 or 5pm)?
I would say this year was heavier than most. I caught hundreds. You missed the heavy rush.

last year was one of the best season in last 7 years.

This year is bust for me so far.
This season is not over yet boys.  I think the heavy squid numbers will be in this weekend.  I went on Monday under the Newport Bridge and at around 12:30AM.  The bite was heavy, it lasted for like an hour and a half.  Big tubes.  But it was really windy condition, and I was too tired to add more jigs to my rig.  I was using 3 classic squid jigs and a sinker.  I fished the bottom using this rig.  I also used the the coleman jigs seen from the photo below.  I let it go 10~15ft slow sinking..and got big tubes jigging this way too.  Go out there boys..season's still in full swing..I am going tonight..hope you see more boats out there...

It looks like your getting them during the day at the bridge also.
Saw some schoolies (striper) in the lights under my boat at the marina last night.   Water temps are good.   This is usually what I look for as a predictor of when to hit the beaches.  Hopefully they (squid) will school up and be hungry.

Last year was crazy. Low tide, high tide, bottom of causeway, top, Hyatt side, Jamestown all on fire! Maybe the winter delayed them. Go get them fellas
I cant believe only Tongvo is the only person to report they caught squid in  Newport this year,  where are the squid?

You should believe there are quite a few getting them but keeping very quiet about it.

And I don't blame them after some of the actions I have witnessed at the well known

public spots and it worked because I won't go back there.  Those giant squid that were

at GI last year that we all enjoyed were huge and crammed full of eggs and there were

endless thousands of them for days on end.   Nope havent seen anything like that this

year, even out boat fishing.   Maybe they missed and hit the cape this year??   Maybe

they have not arrived yet but I wouldn't count on it.  Maybe Bruce caught them all last

year.  Managed to turn 5 squid into 8 nice size black sea bass in 3 hrs of fishing.  probably

be buying squid this year as the season goes on.   Scup / Porgies are HUGE this yr  I mean

18-22" and 2 at a time  sort of a pain for me as I don't eat em and just toss em back,  one

guy saw me throw back a 20" and and said some people he knows would have killed me for

doing that, I said I know those same people and we laughed.   Keep in mind I am boat fishing.

No one steps on your head out there.

JANZ,  Did you get your sea bass in Mass.? They have an 8 fish limit there, not in RI. We limited out w/ 64 nice sea bass over 2 days Fri. + Sat.) in Buzzards Bay. We're throwing back 16" keepers aand kept about 20 jumbo porgies. You could get your limit in less than an hour when the tide was right. The fresh caught squid was tjhe ticket.

RI rec black sea bass doesn't open until 7/2, and then its only 1 fish @14" until sept, when it goes to 7 fish.

Was anyone at JT last night? We only caught 2, and they were on the smaller side.
The squidding in Bristol was unbelievable this year.it lasted about a week and 3 nights in a row I filled a bucket.they were everywhere until someone screwed it up by complaining.there still getting them but not in big numbers.it only takes one person to complain and they shut down the fishing on the lower docks but u also have to lol at it from there point of view.if I was paying good money to keep my boat at a marina the last thing I would wanna c is my boat all inked up and trash on the docks.hopefully a lesson was learned this season to keep it clean and don't squid next to the boats.i hope it doesn't screw things up for the fall run.

Western end of buzzards bay.   Used to fish pt jude until they (RI) messed with the limits.  Now going out of MA and I

only fish nice days.   But yes the bottom fishing is fantastic this year.  No Fluke yet.  Boat near me got a blue fish

also.   Marked 3 huge schools of squid but did not try for them as I was sea bass fishing.   Marked a couple

schools of scup that blotted out the whole screen from 5 ft below surface to bottom in 43 ft of water, crazy

haven't seen stuff like that in many yrs.  Hope it lasts right through the summer.
We have been going every night and getting squid by boat. Typically from 20 to 100 pounds depending on location. Going out again monday night with a few clients

I was. I've got 30s within 30min but I have to leave because I forgot to bring my winter pants and I only wearing shorts, and I can't stand cold

Hey Bruce, what time were you there? I was there between 8 and 11pm and it was very, very slow. I saw others catching as well, but it was more like "one here, one there."

I was there about 8 to 10. I was first one starting to catch them.
