My dad's family lives there and we go fishing every year. We fish in Donegal, which is in the north-western part. Typical catches include cod, pollock, mackerel, "byons", and salmon & flatfish with a net. We usually go out in the small fishing boat or cast off the rocks. My family has fished for decades but has never tried for squid. My grandad says that every now and then he sees "cuttlefish" in the net. I think it's safe to say that they have somewhat contradicted and disregarded my idea. But I am determined! I am interested in picking up a few jigs and trying it this year.

My questions are:



Can you catch squid there / are they abundant?



Is it an okay time of year?



What types live there?



Any advise or tips?

The answer is YES!!!! There are quite good numbers of squid over there, I don't have the exact time and location, but I think Ireland is small enough that any location should be good as long as you got the time down. I've recently been having some orders from Ireland, so I would guess this is a potentially good time. I have heard that generally they will go out in their skiff at night, and hang a light overboard to attract the squid in. From what I have heard, there is a small group that are doing this there and earning very good money for a nights catch of squid.



So if you want to catch squid, that is my suggestion. You could probably do it during the day as well, but it would be more difficult to locate them. As for squid jigs, we have quite a large selection of jigs that would work well.

Yes there is Squid fishing in Donegal....

Normally from Mid July to October they can be got from boat....

I fish then from St Johns Point just outside Killybegs...

Never tryed from the shore but with high tides they be right tight on the shore..

As for abundantance normaly they are big amounts there but this year they have not arrived yet...

They are in a few different areas on st johns point ...

Also from Tellin near Carrick they have been caugh from Boats...

Squid in Tellin are alot larger normaly around .75 to 1.5kg....

Hi everyone

I'm based in Dublin and am hoping to do some squidding in Wexford and Clare this year
