Kick ass Mike, great to hear you got a good bag of fish. I'm planning a kayak fish chasing salmon at Black Rock on Saturday afternoon but wouldn't mind floundering somewhere fairly local (somewhere between Mordialloc-Frankston) on Saturday night. I'd also be keen to do Friday night, but I've got an experiment running that won't finish until late, so I wouldn't be able to get out until midnight or so. Forecast looks superb!

otherwise hows about tomorrow night anyway? i'm not so excited about seaford anymore. theres no bottom variability, so if theres no flounder, theres nothing around. hows about closer to mordialloc. i've never tried anywhere past the patterson river mouth

well, its not seaford or pattersons lakes, but last night i made the decision to head down to blairgowrie. Jaz was crook, so it was just me. weather was a little windy when i got there (about 9), and i thought i'd wasted a trip. decided to head out anyway, and was rewarded with completely still water from about 9:45 -12:00 when i got out of that water. its was warm and real comfortable. only problem was that edible fish were few and far between. saw three flounder, although all together they would have been lucky to make a legal fish. I got a nice Sand Flathead (43cm), and should have had 2 more, the first i grazed, but not enough, and the third I spooked, got a second chance and was a little slow on the shot. saw a huge school of mullet, but i really think you need more than one person to have good luck with them, they are real quick. also saw perhaps 50 banjo sharks of various sizes, and more than 200 toadies and puffers. so much life but no eating. saw some real nice gar in the deeper water, but i was really too deep to spear them from the surface. it was while i was looking for flatties in the deeper sandy areas.





so all in all i got



1 43cm sand flathead

4 small gar

3 small squid



not a bad evening.

Good to hear you got out Steeny, and were rewarded for your efforts. Thanks for the text on Saturday, I'm glad I didn't go in the end, I've still got a nice cough which would probably be worse after a few hours in the cold night air. One thing I did forget to mention...Arrgh.



There is a sale on at Aussie Disposals Jazman.



I picked up a floundering light exactly like mine for $15! Bargain, forget Ray's, it looks like BigW and Aussie disposals are where my business is going.



Also I still can't find good enough pipe for an extra spear. Amart allsports had a three-piece and two piece aluminium and fibre glass spears, but they where five-prong clusters and cost $38 for Aluminium and $58 for fibre glass! You haven't come across anything have you?

compleat angler have a sale coming up and they had a flounder light for $15 also. plus some squid jigs on sale...the ones that make a clicking noise underwater.

The fishing store in Cranbourne (forgotten its name) has c. 7 ft two-piece aluminium spears (5 prong) for $30. I also think theres a >20% off everything sale on at the moment.



Has anyone else ben out snorkling yet? Waters warming up pretty quickly.

Just like to let you know that Anaconda in Bayswater is selling 2 piece 7ft aluminium 5prong cluster head spears (thats a mouthful) for $9 each. Mojiko Branded







But be warned, i bought one of these a while ago (for $14) and when you hit a rock, the prongs will possibly bend. wait, they WILL eventually bend. but, you can screw off the prong head and put on your own, buying the shaft and rubber essentially for $9.







Sale item, so make sure you dont miss it if you want it. They also sell fibreglass ones (much better quality) for $40 or $50.

Back on topic, i had a go at floundering in Tassie around Easter this year... Was good fun until you stepped on these HUGE spider crabs in the dark, those bastards have a go.





When my mate reached down and pulled one up for me to look at.... my interest in Floundering came to a fairly short end.

Not sure if you can eat them Glen, but i can tell you there are HUGE!!!!

GF had waders on, i was in wetsuit with booties and they nip you through the booties no problem at all.
